good confirmation of https://www.rx8club.com/general-automotive-49/first-drive-mazda-cx-7-diesel-case-mazda-diesels-us-193818/
as for the 6 speed. only something like 8 percent choose the 6speed and since the point of this model is to optimize the MPG for CAFE putting in the whole SKY platform which includes the new tranny only makes sense

Jedi,
6spd > Automatic ANY DAY when its behind a Cummins, or Powerjoke(Powerstroke).
Automatics behind truck diesels are junk unless they are upgraded, or you own a Chevy with the Allison Automatic. **** Dodge should of stepped there game up when Chevy's Allison contract was up and bought the *******.

i'm ok w/ an auto. this will likely be a fabulous engine and i'll considering getting one as a primary car/daily driver. sure i would always prefer a stick, but for fuel economy purposes modern automatics can be coaxed to hyper-efficiency. a mazda6, also, makes a nice comfy cruiser/commuter and an auto suits that role. and realistically, stick shift is not a seller in this segment in this country; this is one of mazda's bread and butter cars, so the decision makes sense. i commend mazda highly for bringing this to the US. hopefully more companies will follow suit, and hopefully it'll do well so they'll offer some form of diesel in the mazda2 here later
as daily diesel car driver (Peugeot, Fiat, BMW and Mazda in pasts times) i must admit that loosing an MT tranny in a diesel car is not so bad at last.....the clutch in a very torquey diesel engine is very heavy and annoynig into stop and go situation.
the engines give its best until 3500 prm and "the best part" is from 1500 to 3000.
loosing a MT is not a big problem IMHO.
my next car (if diesel powered, maybe a Sky-D) will be AT......
