I had read something else awhile ago that mentioned HCCI in connection with the Sky G. It seems like Sky G is an intermediate step to HCCI. Using some HCCI ideas while still utilizing a spark.
The technical paper analyses the effects of different fuel components on ignition performance in a high-compression gasoline HCCI engine, and develops a theoretical model that predicts auto-ignition timing for the various grades of gasoline used in different markets. The paper also shows that, when the engine is operated with a standard spark ignition, the extra heat generated as the piston approaches top-dead-center does not increase the likelihood of knocking (abnormal combustion), enabling increased power output. Mazda's breakthrough SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine, which significantly improves fuel economy and torque thanks to the world's highest compression ratio of 14.0:1, utilizes the results of this analysis.

Wow, this seems to fall into the really big deal category. Seems to me that removing NOx from the emission equation, one would then be free to run very lean mixtures which would be great from HCx and from an mpg standpoint.
If you note Japan automotive industry seem not keen to use a massive downsizing with turbo in gasoline engines..
in that interview the Mazda engineer said that is not easy to obtain an HCCI engine from a small displacement+turbo engine....
