Mazda Develops Vibration REDUCING Body Panels

http://www.tradingmarkets.com/.site/...20News/764987/
TOKYO, Oct 31, 2007 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- MZDAF | charts | news | PowerRating -- Mazda Motor Corp. (TSE:7261) has developed an auto body panel with a new structure that reduces the need for vibration-damping materials made of rubber.

The steel sheet used in the panels on the floor of the vehicle cabin has indentions in the centre that are several dozen centimeters in diameter and 7-8mm deep. The indentations make it more difficult for vibrations to be transmitted.

With conventional flat panels, vibrations are damped by attaching 5-6 kilograms of vibration-damping materials. With the new structure, vibration-damping materials need only be attached to the flat parts of the panel, allowing 20 per cent less to be used and thereby helping make vehicles lighter.

Japan's Mazda will begin utilizing the new panels in its Demio compact car, with plans to expand use to other vehicles as new models are introduced in the future.

i remember some talk of this in the mazda2 news but hadnt seen it have an article to itself yet. cheers to Mazda for continuing to add lightness

Good. Two benefits, reduction of weight and noise.

That's awesome. A car company that wants to make things lighter. That's how it should be done. Someone tell Mitsubishi! They've got econoboxes that are heavier than anyone elses and only getting heavier. Maybe that's why they need to slap a turbo on one of them and label it as a so called performance car!

That is pretty cool. I am really proud of Mazda's efforts and success in weight reductions.

If it were just that easy all auto makers would be doing it.
