Mazda Design Chief wants a new RX-7

According to Autocar the newest Design Boss "has done sketches of an RX7 replacement and is keen to push through a new two-seater sports car."
"We really want to have an RX-7 and if the market allows us to build it we will have it ready," he said.

Maeda gave strong hints that he is currently pursuading other senior Mazda bosses to give the new sports car the green light.

Maeda-san led the teams that designed the RX-8 and the new Mazda2. His father Matasaburo Maeda was the design lead for the original RX-7

This literally puts a smile on my face. Can't wait to see the official designs instead of stupid BS renderings made by magazines and such.

That speaks volumes, sadly. But I hope to see this car someday.

One step further in terms of what's being revealed to the public. No green light as yet though. I've always said RX7 will return. The question now is, RX8?

Sounds like a solid plan, I will allow it, who's not allowing it? They should be punished.

I wonder if that means it will be an RX7 or that it will be online with the performance of the 7's.

+1.

One good thing about this... It kind of settles the question about what the 16X is intended for. Now they could just be throwing us off, but if he feels the need to start pushing it, and they already had intentions of another car to put the 16X in, then it's not the 7.

We're still in the dark. Just not as dark. We don't know if a 4 door is in the works as well. Will the 8 die and we wait for the 7? Will the 8 continue in small numbers until a 7 arrives? Will a new 8 appear with a 1.6L and be followed by the 7?

Trust me, we're still in the dark. Our ultra secretive overly conservative manufacturer is not showing more cards than they deem essential to display at this time. I think that it's bad for their stock that we don't have a good idea of their direction and vision.

Paul.

reading thru the lines .....my toughts:

a)the car is barely ready (here in EU we use to say: "it's in the freezer") Mazda seniors are waiting for better worl d economy to turn on the green light.

b) Mazda produce ONLY in Japan (almost for EU market).... they need to move upmarket and for enthusiasts to mantain gains over a single car. I quote the part of Maeda speak when he talk about "a better interior".....

c)Maeda san is the right person for build good-looking cars , not only stunning protoypes....we have seen a lot of them in the pasts years

Mazda2 it's a Maeda's work, and after one year of owning i have appreciated a lot of nice "smart little things" into Mazda 2 design...

So by saying "when the market allows it", does that mean we are no longer talking about an "affordable" sportscar?

That could be an interpretation, but I doubt it. The current market doesn't really allow anything 'un-green' that is also 'un-practical' right now. Sure there is niche stuff, but even a $30,000 gas guzzling sports car probably wouldn't gain much of a following to support it financially right now. (I almost put $20,000, but then I realized, that is where the econobox's are sitting in price, or almost.) Most of the 8s out there were originally sold well before the economy crash, and that was considered cheap at the time.

Good news indeed. I'll probably be one of the people that will look at it, determine if I can afford both the 8 and 7 *probably not* and get the 7.

Wow sounds like some good news.
Hope he really does push it, Maeda has some real good ideas. Hopefully it won't have the same problems as the rx8 in the beginning. Let's just hope they learn.

Perhaps they could use the 16x in a new RX8 to work out the engine bugs before the new RX7 even hits the market. That would be stellar!

Autoblog is reporting the same:
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/20/r...g-on-new-rx-7/

they say it's moving upmarket as well.. and that's likely a good thing for the 7 and possibly the 8. I doubt they'd want to produce 2 engines, but maybe 2 sets of rotors? a low compression set for a turbo 7 and a high compression set for the 8?

That's just me speculating.
