The EU has just announced that all cars must confirm to 95 grams of Co2 per KM (maximum) from 2020.
This is 2/3 (thirds) less Co2 than last RENESIS emitted in our RX-8’s.!
Effectively this will also ban most diesels and majority of IC Engines over 4 cylinders in EU from 2020.
Mazda has said it’s Skyactiv II piston engines will achieve another 30% fuel consumption
improvement from 2020 which will lower Co2 below current (104 g per KM roughly in 2.0 l SA engines).
Australia and New Zealand will also fully adopt all EU passenger vehicle regulations from 2018.
Japan Prime Minister has also said (at G20) they will align with most of EU regulations to
help standardise car production costs, something their car makers have been asking for for many years.
As important the Americas are for Mazda they will never make an all new RE car for these
markets only, it has to be sold worldwide.
IMO any RE as a primary source of power has sadly been given the final kiss of death.
A RE hybrid or as a RE Generator/electric is not an RX-?.
I tend to agree. Saying that this is the death knell says that "it will not be possible for Mazda to figure out how to meet this goal". I would rather not put those kinds of restrictions on the Mazda engineers. They have already proven quite ingenious, even if a bit crazy. It's also not a very firm foundation to say that the technology developed with Ford's influence 20 years before the deadline means that they can't meet it.

I've also done some digging around but can't find how the 'average' is calculated. I suspect it is much like the US's CAFE score, in that it is the average produced by the manufacturer. So if they sell 100 cars at 94g/km, they could sell 1 car at 195g/km and they would be at the average 95g/km.
Given the low volume of the rotary and Mazda's success rate at piston engine development, I don't see this 95g/km as much of a barrier, assuming that the average is calculated like this.

in EU Germans Carmakers are pushing hard on hybrids , in my opinion the diesels will decline (not disappear , just decline in favor of hybrids w/gasoline)

Yeah there are always possibilities, but I can't see how Mazda are going to improve real Rotary Engine fuel economy by about 80% to get Co2 down to passable levels and still have a usable engine with HP.

France has just passed a law which heavily taxes diesel fuel and tax incentives for owners to move from diesel to gasoline engined cars.

Have you seen the pics of updated Mazda 6, it now has Mazda Connect (MZD Connect) instead of Tom-Tom and updated dash. Updated CX-5 also has Mazda Connect, but still in same dash.
notice the peripheral intake, side exhaust and "blow-by gas recirculation port".
I don't think it's a vestigial side intake port, this is the new tiny 330cc engine not sharing any old parts so there's no reason to have a vestigial port. Maybe they found a way to clean up emissions or reduce blow-by with that port?
cuz it's gonna confuse the **** out of most people, they be like this car has 2 different type of engines? how could that be? whats a rotary? huh what ?
