Mazda 6 and CX-3 Discontinued

2021 will be the Mazda 6 and CX-3 final year.

From what I have read there will be no next Gen 6 from the Vision Sedan in 2022.
New straight 6 engine only for all new Alabama made SUV.

6 sales like all Sedans have tanked, you wont see a next gen 3 either...

All SUV, CUV

sounds like they're going the route of Ford Motor Co as they killed off their sedans a few years ago also.
For North America it seems to make sense, all I see are CX-5 / 9, the CX-30 seems to be gaining steam as well. The CX-3 was always too small of a CUV for this market, I have a friend who has one and while nice, it just feels too cramped.

I'm usually surprised when I do see a Mazda 6, the new ones are hardly on the road here in SoCal

Wonder if the Mazda 3 will survive long term.

Nope, I REALLY DOUBT THE 3 WILL SURVIVE AFTER THIS GEN..OOPS.,
CAPS OFF..

Look who knows this may also be MAZDA being sneaky..
They may re-launch all new 6 as a CX-60..
But sedans are dead.

I'm hoping this simply means the current generation is done, and the inline 6 RWD mazda 6 will be out soon.

the inline 6 platform is the immediate future for Mazda so it makes sense to move in that direction and I also as Ash mentioned, expect next gen vehicles to have the double digit name.
CX-50 should be out soon with that inline 6
CX-30 is already on the road
MX - 30
So could we see a 60 moniker for the return of the sedan? maybe.
though truthfully I think there's more money to be made with the 3 as it's still (even after the price increase) reasonably priced for an entry level car

If part of Mazda's business plan as they work to move upwards a bit in the market is to "kill off" the single-digit component of the naming platform, what will happen to vehicles like the long running MX-5? The history, heritage, and reputation of that platform is (in my opinion) one of the most iconic and synonymous with Mazda and the market the motorsports world. Nearly EVERYONE who has a license and has driven is at bare minimum vaguely aware of what a Miata is/looks like. Are they going to/willing to drop the MX-5 name as part of this motion to "freshen up" the names of their lineup? Sounds like a waste of years of hard work just because someone thought it would be a "neat" idea.
Just because someone is smart doesn't mean they are intelligent, and the name changing really does seem to come from a place/decision of the same logic. Thats my $0.02 at least.

There goes re xtender
Japanese media reports say Mazda has scrapped plans for using the rotary range extender in the MX-30. Mazda ditched the rotary range extender partly because it required a bigger battery that would make the vehicle too expensive, Japan’s Nikkei business daily and Nikkan Jidosha Shimbun reported.

If you're adding a range extender in order to allow the vehicle to drive more miles, WHY do you need a bigger battery?

Agree..
The MX-30 has just gone on sale here in OZ, MA is only importing top of range model with everything for $71,000 AUD!!, with 36KW Battery of about 200KM range or 120 miles.
All other brands have double the capacity (range but are heavier in weight).
It is being hammered by local and even EU Motoring Press.

So as usual MMC Japan stuffs up everything they do.
Was reported last week in Automotive News by Mazda Japan that new 300cc Rotary Generator is Dead because of extra cost..
A week later it is still coming in 2022.

My point is why the hell did they not release MX-30 as a small battery EV with the RE Range Extender first!
They are idiots...they just killed all that momentum with Press because MX-30 EV has Range Anxiety with a high $$ Purchase Cost.

Apparently it's a legal classification thing. https://www.autoevolution.com/news/e...rd-165742.html

Calling something a ZEV, as opposed to PHEV, which I guess is what Mazda was aiming at with the range extender, requires at least 75mi of all electric range... which I guess is more than Mazda was aiming at.

Disappointed that there will be no RWD inline 6 Mazda 6. I was kinda looking forward to that.

So help me understand the rationale for a RWD SUV? The only RWD SUV of recent memory is BMW's X1 s28i which is a jacked-up 3-estate...barely considered an SUV. Rare as hens teeth. Everybody went for the xDrive.

Don't right off the 6 yet as it may still come back under another name...like MX-60.

I believe the all new RWD SUV will be made at the new MTM plant and obviously only in Left Hand Drive and only for NA market and will be called a Mazda CX-70. (Toyota platform maybe)

All New CX-5 will be the CX-50 out of Japan.
All new CX-9 will be the CX-90 out of Japan for left and right hand drive markets and will also be RWD 6 Cylinder AFAIK.
