Mazda 2 might not be renewed

I always thought it was priced to close to the Mazda 3.

Slow-selling Mazda2 may not be renewed for U.S.

Regarding the 2; they were years late in bringing it and they brought it with all of it's old technology. Why would you want a sub compact that is less fuel efficient than a compact?

Build it in Mexico and bring the 1.3 Skyactiv to power it. If we can get 50 plus mpg and new Kodo skin wrapped around an even lighter 2 with updated high end looking interior the market is Mazda's to capture.

Mazda needs to get off the back foot and lead in more segments. Don't throw in the towel .

Paul.

/\ That is precisely what will happen...

The 2 will not be discontinued outside NA...in the USA directly?...I don't know, I doubt it.

Don't understand WHY they are continuing with the OLD, very old, 1.5 in the 2 when they offer the 1.3 SA in Japan's (Demio).

I bought one and I love it. With nothing more than R-compound tires and brake pad upgrades, I'm able to narrowly fend off race-prep'ed Miata's...stock suspension and all. I'm pretty sure I couldn't get that kind of performance out of a Fiesta.

Granted, that is a weak selling point to your average customer, but I don't regret my purchase for a moment.

Sad to see the Mazda2 go, but with it only being in the US for 2 years it will make it a somewhat rare car similar to the Speed6 or the MS Protege (minus the whole Mazdaspeed part).

I REALLY was hoping the Skyactive 2 would be available by the time I was buying. 50mpg+ out of the Mazda2 would have been ultra bad *** along with a higher compression motor that would probably make more than the 86whp that I have currently.

The only saving grace might be that the non-sky active version is more friendly to tubrocharging. I'm curious to see the development of aftermarket upgrades for the higher compression skyactive engines.

My thoughts exactly...they seem a day late and a dollar short with everything. Rolling out a line of cars with diesel options may be their big chance to make a splash.

Damn!! I just rented a 2 and loved every second of it. It felt like a FWD Miata! I got a flat and had to switch over to a Sonic and after driving the 2, this thing feels huge and drives big too. It isnt bad and would have been fine if I hadn't driven the 2 first, but I really want my 2 back. The 2 didn't seem under powered and the engine always wanted to rev. I did only get 28mpg from it though but that was alot of launching from redlights for no reason.

I'll be sad to see it go but I hope it comes back with the skyactive and 50+mpg so more people find it on their sub-compact shopping list.

For me, it's just too small for my taste. I'd rather have a Miata than a Mazda 2.

That's not really a comment about the car itself. That's you saying you would rather look at a completely different type of car.

I know, that is why it is a slow selling car to begin with. People still wants big guzzling vehicles, rather than mini cars like the Mazda 2.

Looks like nobody's buying station wagons anymore. Car makers don't make wagons because people rather buy SUV's than a wagon.

I still don't think it's a related comment. It's only slightly better than saying "I'd rather a hummer". To say there is not a market for smaller, fuel efficient vehicles that are cheap is living in the past. It definitely exists and other companies have been fairly successful in the US in that market. Mazda just needs to figure out how to compete even better.

Also, your comments are only largely relevant in the US. In other countries, smaller, fuel efficient cars are WAY more popular. Same applies for wagons. One thing I hate is seeing some of the great wagons that Europe or Asia gets without any hope of making it to the US. Japan has an entire market for kei cars (cars with engines 600 cc or lower) and they are amazingly prominent. While I don't expect that to catch on in the US anytime soon, I think cars like the Mazda 2 definitely have a huge market potential that will grow with time.

That may be a nice way for fiat to earn some money after being bought by an american company (we know that's not the other way around, sadly...)

Working through Mazda information for work (yes, actually), I got to thinking about the statement from Mazda ... a while back. Still in 2012 I think.

The one where they said either 9 or 10 vehicles in the lineup and there was a bunch of speculation. Since then, the CX-5 has been confirmed to replace the Tribute and the CX-7, the 2 might be dropped, and the RX-8 is done.

That leaves only 6 models (Miata, 3, 5, 6, CX-5, and CX-9) as solid, possibly the pickup if they count elsewhere, not listed on MazdaUSA.com. Even if the pickup is included, that still leaves 2 or 3 vehicles unaccounted for, possibly as many as 4?

they have 2 vans, the Biante and the MPV/Mazda8, plus the 2 and a micro car on top of your count. that count of vehicles in the lineup was total and not region specific

hmm there IS quite a bit of chatter about Fiat building the Mazda 2 alongside the Punto

Fiat

or perhaps Mazda to use the plants themselves PUNTO 2-Fiat, nuova Cig a Pomigliano, si guarda a ipotesi Mazda | Reuters

EYES ON AGREEMENTS WITH PRODUCERS

The scheme would be that of the Fiat plant in Vychy in Poland, where we can achieve the Ford Ka, according to union sources who report a visit to Pomigliano executives of the Japanese group.

"Engineers of the Mazda came to visit the facility on August 1," said a union source.

"That triggered speculation about the possibility of an agreement, because just before Marchionne spoke of plants in use to other manufacturers," he adds.

Two other union sources confirmed the visit of Mazda also in other plants, without giving further details.

He was the CEO Fiat, Sergio Marchionne, speaking at the beginning of June, the intention to share the facilities.

"Our production network is available to any manufacturer," he said. "We are ready to do whatever it takes to use our stablimenti. I gave this willingness to Mazda, but has not yet been decided which plant could be used."
