i could have mispoke about the m3 steering though.
Edit: No worries...Misreads on my part as well happen more often than I would like.

yeah...i get asked that question alot! the Z4M is kind of the red headed step child of bmw. they never really wanted to produce it in the first place, but did so reluctantly.
after only a 3 year run with fairly low numbers it is a bit of a rarity...moreso the coupe than the roadster.

I know given the choice between an E46 M3 and a Z4M it would be an easy decision. Z4M seems to be more of a raw drivers car.
Plus I think I've seen 1 or 2 Z4M's around here, ever, and I see about half a dozen M3's a day.

sadly, performance mods are in extremely short supply for the Z4M...especially engine mods that gain any REAL horsepower.
under the hood it's the venerable S54 alright, but they put the newer DME on it which is alot harder to figure out and reprogram making any existing E46 M3 S54 mod essentially useless.
given the low production numbers most performance houses didn't bother, but those that have figured it out are very proud of their accomplishment and charge an equally proud premium for it.

and do you plan any mods at all to it in the future?
i spend as much time as i can at the track and have done a few mods to make that endeavor much more enjoyable. i have done the typical fluid upgrades (tranny, diff, clutch, brake), a dedicated set of track wheels, rotors and race pads, plus stainless steel braided brake lines and upgraded caliper pins. modified the clutch line CDV. added a UUC short shifter kit, ///M race pedals and strut brace....plus alot of simple aesthetic stuff.
nothing major since REAL engine mods don't exist. next up will likely be upgraded suspension with adjustable camber plates...maybe a BBK when these don't seem up to the task any more.
thanks for the props. it is a really fun car and drives great...turns alot of heads just like my 8 did.

Nahhh. It's not a 1/4 car...never really will be...just not designed for it.
Bone stock a Z4M is in the low 13's...with some better tires and the only reasonable engine mods available (gaining only about 6hp) you can get her into the high 12's. Not too bad.
