My wife bought one after her Passat lease expired.
It's an '09 2.5 Touring i w/Blind Spot Warning System.
The fuel economy is great, the body structure is solid as a drum, the rear seat is huge and it's quiet and has no rattles.
However, the slushbox is very laggy and hangs in 4th and 5th gear shifting, the higher end electroluminescent gauges are worse than the base ones, and we're not particularly fond of the mix pleather/cloth seats (which are no more in 2010).
Overall, it's a good car. When she got hers, before Cash for Clunker madness drove prices up, the price was literally $1,900 less - and I do expect prices to fall again with incentives and inventory builds.
I actually had a quote for an auto base for $16,700 plus TTL or a manual for $15,600 plus TTL three months ago, but passed.

I was actually considering getting a left over 09 mazda 6 i since the 2.5 gets good mpg and seems like it is at least a big enough engine to make it move the new mazda 6. I actually liked the idea of the cloth/leather combo seats. What do you find about them that you do not like might I ask? Information from an owner is of more value then one whom has not yet purchased for sure
Over all are you (wife) happy with auto setup or did you feel the manual would be a better play...now that you already own the new mazda 6?
Have not seen the white yet, though did the black cherry, and kona blue (that last one only in a show room...not outside). Comet Gray could be an option but very few 09 models left now days so selection on 09 i series auto is rather limited.
Also worry about seat comfort in base model...some have indicated it is rather lacking.

The more I look at the new 6, the more I like the tidiness of the previous one. Looks like they tried to hard to make a big car overly stylish. Prefer the Euro 6.
