Just got off the phone with my Mercury insurance agent. I am paying about $780/6 months for my 8. It will go down to $740 for the M3, $699 for the 330ci (they don't have the 335i in their system yet) and $645 for the Z4si.

It costs more to insure the RX-8 than to insure an M3

 

Wow. I can tell you that it costed me 2500 for 12 months in the RX-8 and 4200 for the Z4. That was from last year in Boston.

 

from what I gather, last year's m3 was not like the new one, this 07 model seems to have gotten bigger and has bigger engines, so maybe there is a mistake in the part of the insurance, a lot of things to consider though, I'd bet that a BMW has better crash ratings than a RX-8, but the fact that the new m3 http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/M/M3Coupe/techdata.htm is a 333hp/267tq car and weights 3,415lbs puts it above the RX-8 this year even if the previous year model was comparable to the 8, I'd look into a G35 coupe if I were you, I got lower insurance rates on the G35... I still bought the RX-8 but it is sad that a faster more dangerous car gets better on the insurance than the fantastic handling mazda RX-8

 

I am confused. The current M3 - E46 came out in late 1999 or early 2000. It is still the same. 2006 is the last model year for it. The new one E92 M3 will come out as the 2008 model with a 4 lit V-8 making ~418HP. The RX-8 is not comparable the E46 M3. Are you refering to the pre-1999 240 HP E36 M3? The quote I got is for an 05 M3.

Insurance for the G35 coupe is almost the same as the RX-8 according to my agent.

My insurance went down from my Celica GTS to this RX8.

 

When I lived in NYC I paid $1140 for my 8 and my wifes Rav 4 both 2005 vehicles.

 

$600 a year for my only car. "state farm"

 

To tell you the truth. I wouldn't be surprise to pay near the 3500 range for the Type S around with my driving record. But I did buy the RX-8 because the insurance was relatively cheaper then other cars.

 

This interesting, I never REALLY check the cost of insuring my Rx-8...
My insurance is $1536 a year...

Then I realize, I have 100k/300k coverage and I lowered my deductible to $240...
If I re-calculate for a traditional 30/60 and a $500 deductible, the cost will go down to about $705 a year...

For the Acura RSX driver, I am NOT surprise about the insurance cost...Anything from Honda, other than an Acura RL, MDX and maybe a TL will be VERY expensive...Most of the kids these days get the Civics, Accords even the Element and tricked them out, to do street racing...Not surprised...

 

I guess it has to do with the demographics that the particular vehicle attracts.
The BMWs are Very expensive, so the entry price tends to weed out the kind of person that wont take care of it and will end up wadding it into a tree.
The RX-8 being more affordable (but having a similar performance potential) is attainable by more of the idiots that "think" they can drive but in all actuality just end up filing an insurrance claim for stupidity.
And then you have the infamous "H" boys (god bless them I used to be one of them)
Honda's are furiously (pun intended) popular with the Ricer crowd so the ammount of wrecks is astronomical. Add to that the fact that they are built like legos (most all parts are compatible with evry other model) and that helps it be the most stolen car brand in the world (engine swaps are much more affordable when you can just lift the engine off of the poor sap that lives down the street, instead of having to buy it)
and that gives Hondas some of the worst costs to insure anywhere.
