Ok guys, as a Houston police officer I can't speak for californial's police departments. But I can say that all this cop hating is not justified. I'm 23 years old, been a cop for 2 years now and I've never seen or heard of some **** like this. The cars are being destroyed because they are modded with stolen parts. You actually think the "poor uneducated" teen is gonna take pictures of his car being crushed without putting up a fight? They know most of that **** is stolen. I don't drive around looking for kids to victimize, I could care less. What I do care about are all the retards who race their cars in school zones and drive without insurance or dl. I bet CA did this after receiving complaints from all the whiners out there. That's how it works here in Houston. Citizens plus Complaints equals task forces and crackdowns. Blame them its their tax dollars too. We are just trying to do our jobs. You don't like it move to another country where stolen car parts and illegal racing is allowed. Its too damn easy to file a complaint against a cop if you feel your rights are being violated. If people would do the right thing this **** wouldn't happen.

A close friend is a cop in FL, you sound just like him verbatim...btw, his off-duty car is an EVO, so he's all about the sport compact scene and not cracking down just because he feels like it...they get the orders and they follow them, plain and simple.

Screw gas mileage
man i thought okinawa japan had it bad. meaning on certain nights of the week, the JP police will have traps set up on the side of a major busy road. And when ever they see a car that is modded they have that car pull over to the side ot get a ticket and have all mods stripped by a certain date and pay 1k+ dollars for reinspect. and this is just being in traffic (not racing)
but cali wow they destroy . but is this only if they catch you racing, or both mod and racing?

Is it illegal to mod the car?

People will always complain when the law comes after them, I bet if it was one of ours 8s being burglarized for parts, people like LionZoo would be calling the police asking for some form of justice. That kid said, "THEY CAN TAKE MY CAR, BUT THEY'LL NEVER TAKE MY MEMORIES" sounds like guilty talk to me. He knows he's been stealing parts and burglarizing cars, thats why he rather pose for the newspaper and NOT put up a fight.

modded cars and stolen parts don't kill people. Stupid ******* kids driving WAAAY faster then they should be or know how to is what kills people.
I'd bet you any amount of money that more people are hurt / killed by soccer moms talking on their cell phones while driving their big *** SUV's then by cars with stolen parts who might not even be street racing at the time.
Sometimes I'm embarassed to live in California.

RX8 and a Truk....
It was well-put up above a bit - but speeding doesn't kill...poor decision-making kills. Let's treat the cause of the racing; ****-poor decision-making by kids.
Drinking age should be 16 (with parents present); driving age should be 18-21.

I'm pretty sure it's a CRX with a different front fascia, but I'm not a Honda expert by any stretch... the proportions look right, and the headlights look like they're a bit taller than a JDM Integra... er... were...

How life circles...
All this is going to do to the import scene is what happened to the hot rodding scene back in the day. People are going to know that if they get caught (stolen parts or not) there is a chance of getting thier car crushed. All that money formerly driving the appearance and stereo market is going to dry up and go directly into go-fast(er) parts. Cars are going to be 3-5 colors or rusted, not maintained externally the way they should (= less safe) and go faster than they do now. Welcome to the dawn of the Import Rat Rod era. That is my 2 cents.

I think the bottom one is a Nissan 240SX.
Either way, I'm sure out of the thousands of cars that they could've crushed they picked these for a reason. As stupid as this may seem, it's not as simple as it seems. I'm sure it wasn't a matter of these 5 cars street racing one day and the next day getting crushed for doing so. Plus that guy that is quoted in the quote by the OP sounds like a sarcastic *****.

From the linked article:
A high-school kid with $10,000 in mods who admits he's a street racer. Anyone else think that maybe there's a chance this event saved him from an early grave?
Sergio Zavala, 18, was pulled over in his 1993 yellow Honda Civic for a broken tail light in December. He had purchased a B-20 Vtech engine with a double-overhead cam a couple months before, and after a police investigation, was told it was stolen.
Zavala, who admits he's been involved in street racing, estimates he and his mother spent about $10,000 on improvements to his car.
...
"It's heartbreaking to see this," said Zavala, who graduated from high school last week.

Police said they have managed to reduce illegal racing and related fatal collisions, but know the underground hobby still thrives.

You would think that they'd at least be smart enough to auction the cars off. Yay government!
Oh and Ontario apparently wants to start crushing cars BEFORE they race:

yah i guess you can say that. if car is to low, exhaust to loud etc they will make us remove and put stock back on so we can get reinspect which cost about $1k + dollars. depends what kind of car engine size. but it doesnt stop ppl from modding cars though.
