High Density Hydrogen Pellets/non-volatile!

well this is GREAT news for the hydrogen auto development...

"A group of scientists are going to present their breakthrough in hydrogen storage this Wednesday. In contrast to previous storage mechanisms, this method binds hydrogen to a pellet which is completely safe to handle at room temperature. While bound in this medium no hydrogen loss occurs, enabling hydrogen to be stored cheaply for indefinite periods. When needed, the extraction of hydrogen is relatively simple. The pellets exceed all criteria set by the US Department of Energy for 2015, enabling a car to drive more than 500 km on a 50 L tank (13 MJ/l)"

here is more information!

wow Hercules' post is very interesting...I wonder how development is proceeding in regards to the 'powerball' tech

cool. Wish I knew how they broke it down, I'm guessing heat of some sort. wonder what happens to the remaining material, hopefully its something that can be reused also.

Now we just need a couple of nuke reactors making hydrogen round da clock.

That would be sweet. I assume hydrogen would be cheaper than gasoline, as it is one of the more abundant resources on the planet. Or is there some sort of incredibly expensive process to refine it and make it fuel-able? Thanks for helping out a n00b.

The common method for getting hydrogen is to hydrolicize water. All it takes is electricity and water, which last time I checked the earth has quite a bit of. Like brillo said, use nuke power and you can pour out the hydrogen gas.

From what I've read about this, what they do is use a salt crystal to absorb ammonia gas. The ammonia gas is passed over a platinum catalyst to generate the hydrogen. The details of how they extract the ammonia from the salt is not explained.

Saw the explanation at http://hardware.slashdot.org/article...hold=3&tid=232

So, if we were to purchase this at a gas station, would the prices be comparable, lower or even higher than current gasoline prices? Just curious, I know it is a long way out.

That's pretty cool. Hydrogen I feel is only a few years away from being mainstream. Nissan is supposedly going to intro a publicly available Hydrogen powered vehicle in 2008.
