^Interesting. The skidpad numbers may be skewed. I don't know and I don't care. Skidpad numbers can be misleading. You should also consider the vehicle weight, number of gears, weight distribution, steering ratio, power delivery, etc. I think the 8 probably handles better when more factors are considered. The RX8 rates higher on my "tossability" scale which is closely related to my "fun to drive" scale.

The JD Power data hows that your statement of "American cars are still consistently on the bottom" is false. With this data it appears the Euros are sniffing the tails while the Japanese are still leading. Notice that some Japanese brands also trail in reliability.

I have also looked over the Consumer Reports data and have a few observations:

1. The JD Power data shows twice as many problems per vehicle per year than CR.
2. Some makes score well in one survey and poor in the other survey. Look at Cadillac.
3. The JD Power survey is for year 2000 vehicles and covers 3 years of use. The CR survey uses 1995 and newr cars. Since the JD Power survey uses a newer vehicle fleet I think the data is more accurate regarding new vehicles we would purchase today.

Overall I would say the trend is showing increased American reliability, especially on the newer designed vehicles.
The table in the CR page I linked specifically mentioned it is for MY 2000 cars. It says so in a large font at the top of the table. The data going back to 1995 is shown at the bottom of the page, and according to that graph, American cars have caught up with, but not surpassed, European reliability.

In the JDP survey I couldn't find much about specific models, which is what this thread is about. The point is, I haven't seen any stastically significant data showing the Corvette to be reliable. While the RX-8 hasn't been out long enough to tell just yet, Mazda's other Japan-built sportscar, the Miata, is always ranked very high for reliability, if the past is any indication.

Hence why the number one vehicle involved in rollover incidents isn't an SUV, it's the 'vette.

I traded my 99 c-5 in on my 8.

reasons why:

- 60,000 miles on it.

-No warranty.

- Tires are good for only 12,000 to 15,000 and they are $1,200 for them.

- Fuel trip computer was 40 miles off. ran out of gas.

- Removable top seal leaking.

- Power seats working intermintenly.

- Cheap platic interior pieces were breaking.

- No cup holder.

I do miss the power of the vette but that is it!

Welcome to the world of high performance tires. Do you think the same performance tires on a 300Z or an RX-8 will magically last longer?

This is like comparing an apple and a kiwi. I have driven both. The rx8 is much easier to drive and the interior is MUCH nicer. It fits you better and is easy to drive fast because of the feel and feedback you get although it is a little tricky because of the small amount of torque. The corvette is easy to drive, but in a different way. With massive amounts of torque you can basically just let the clutch out at idle and you will go. There is a bit less road feel and connection with the car but the power and sheer grip makes up for it. The interior really isn't that bad for a sports car and the gauges look really good (thats the only thing you should be looking at while driving besides the road). Overall the 8 is a more tossable car that you can hop in and drive. The Z06 is a real beast and you have to really know what you are doing when you approach its limits. Both great cars and I'm glad that soon both will be in the family. (my brother is getting the 8)

A Vette will get better gas mileage. For 32K you could have a super-fast, clean, heavily modified and vette-spanking 3rd gen RX-7
