GM to recall 400,000 pickups

Well, there has been alot of pretty good news for GM...at least in Saturn and the G6 & Solstice, but this...they can do without.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060501/...i_ge/gm_recall

But...I realize this happen's more often than must of us realize and it sure does seem no one talks too much about when Toyota or Honda have to recall their cars.

No big deal. This happens all the time and it's relatively minor in this case.

I remember a Toyota recall last year for faulty headlight switches on 1.2x million vehicles, with nary a peep out of anyone.

snizzle...yeah, nothing major.

Yeah...it's the American brands that get the highlights in the news, but maybe it's because we are in the US.

The media loves to point out how "horrible" US automakers are doing. I don't get what's in it for them.....

Yep. Had to go to "greencongress.com" to find the full text of THIS recall for the Prius... For a 'minor' problem that would cause the engine to stop while driving. You know, MINOR, like the engine will quit when you're on the highway. This affects a miniscule 160,000 cars worldwide, and is almost unreported in the US press:

Toyota Extends Prius Recall Globally to 160,000
14 October 2005

Toyota is extending its recall of 75,000 Prius hybrid in the US (earlier post) worldwide, affecting a total of 160,000 cars.

A software malfunction in the engine control module (ECM) system in models manufactured from August 2003 through February 2005 can cause the engine to stall while driving. Limited operation via the electric motor is still possible, and the electrically-powered brake and steering operation will continue to function.

The recall covers 70,000 Prius cars in Japan; 15,000 in Europe, Australia and other markets; and the 75,000 in the US.

Some more Toyota dirt I just read on Autoweek...

Bad transmission fastener can lead to limping '07 Toyota Camry
LOS ANGELES - Just two months into the launch of its redesigned 2007 Camry, Toyota has a problem on its hands.

A fastener in the automatic transmission can loosen, and as a result drivers can lose the use of second and sixth gear.

The vehicle still can limp to a dealership, however. The problem applies only to the models with a V-6 and a six-speed transmission.

Avalon shows dent in Toyota quality; fixes sought for 'problematic vehicle'
LOS ANGELES -- Alan Seider has owned 11 Toyotas since 1982, but his 2006 Avalon likely will be his last.

He says quality glitches have bedeviled his Toyota sedan, which he has driven less than 6,000 miles since he bought it last July. His dealer could not solve the car's problems. Toyota headquarters stonewalled his appeals, he says.

"There have been significant throttle control and transmission hesitation issues," says Seider, 45, a computer consultant from Roswell, Ga. "I've isolated 15 different rattles in the body work."

Seider is far from alone. Internet chat rooms such as Edmunds.com Town Hall are littered with complaints from Toyota loyalists about the redesigned Avalon, which went on sale in February 2005.

What is more interesting is the number of people in our own country that feel this way.

It's much easier to cause a stir among the public when they already know that that auto maker is going through some rough times. It's like kicking someone when they are already down.

Exactly. Recalls are about responsibility......they are not something to brand a company as 'crap' with. Many times auto recalls are issued prior to the NHTSB taking any legal action. Mazda needs to step-up and take care of a few concerns owners have regarding nuisance problems.
