Four-cylinder Throwdown: Mustang vs. Supra

An interesting review in Car & Driver asking "How Much??":

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...yota-supra-20/

Keep rear-wheel drive cars (with MT) going:

Good grief, no wonder people say Chevy doesn't do any marketing with the Camaro (if you read that one bit with the Camaro 1LE)...

Anyway, if we are just talking about these two, I would take the Mustang just because of manual trans. Oh and the engine won't blow up on me after the warranty passes. I don't trust BMW engines one bit, and unlike rotaries, I have zero sympathy for unreliable piston engines. Be reliable or LS swap. I don't live in cars so interiors is whatever to me, American ponies actually give you tech packages for a decent value.

I have driven the Ecoboost Mustang before with a 6AT and I can't say I liked it too much, though. The lag is noticeable at higher speeds when you stab the throttle, and with what I know about chassis now, it's also not the best in handling. Good enough for any casual fun, though.

Car & Driver really isn't showcasing cars that most want to purchase. Read the editorials - yet they keep on writing about cars many of us will never (want to) afford / own. Case in point the Cullinan article - written in jest by Ezra:

excerpt "Readers are always telling me that the cars we review are too expensive. "Enough with the Bugattis!" they say. "Write about something I can afford." People, I hear you. I, too, am growing weary of reading about $3 million cars. So today I'll take a break from exotics and tell you about an everyday family car. It's called the Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge, and it doesn't cost a million dollars. In fact, it's only a little more than a half-million."

In the 4banger article - they made reference to Chevy saying no to allowing C&D to also test the smallest engined Camaro - Chevy said no but should have allowed a V6 1LE to be tested - I bet cheaper with similar handling with GMs fantastic rheomag suspension.

Can't speak for the Supra, but for the Mustang, that's the MSRP when optioned as such when you want the tech package, etc. It starts at $32k.

No one pays MSRP for an Ecoboost Mustang(unless you order one, which I doubt a lot of people do). From what I have heard, there are a few incentives you can have with Ford cars.

And there are always gonna be lightly used ones you can pick up for a good deal.

Yeah, and it would be interesting to see how the NA V6 compared to the turbo 4s, not to mention the better chassis compared to the Mustang.

One can only wonder what Chevy is thinking with the Camaro...

I'd rather have the NA V6...

That article is kinda weird since it's not a likely crossshop combo. A GR Supra's price is getting close to ZL1 Camaro's price. Locally, I have talked to friends that told me you have to wait half a year for a GR Supra so I think you would probably pay pretty close to MSRP, while you can likely negotiate a ZL1 down.

That said, Supra is small, light and nimble which has its own appeals. Not having a manual sucks, but that seems to be a trend in the industry. Even Chevy is guilty for it on the C8.
