Ford Mondeo, the best ford ever?
Ford Mondeo, the best ford ever?
aside from the gt40 of course!
whilst i was over in europe this past week that was my rental car, and DAMN! if ford sold that over here theyd make a killing!
it had fairly comfy seats, the cloth of which was nicer than the merc cloth in an e-class, all auto windows, automatic climate control, thing was great, trunk was COLLOSAL! and it was a sedan, and i dont think it was too expensive either, got great gass mileage
oh yeah, premium over there is around 4 buck a gallon, damned pricey

The Modeo was sold here as the Ford Contour and the Mercury Mystique a while back. While good cars - they never found their niche in the US and were not a sales success.
The Jaguar X-Type that is sold here is based on the same platform.

The current European Mondeo has never been sold in the USA. I read somewhere that Ford was afraid it would cannabilise sales from the Taurus, so they never replaced the old crappy Contour with this good (for Ford) car when the old Contour was discontinued 3 years ago.

I never heard that the Contour was a crappy car, I think it was just wrong for this market. More expensive than an Escort, smaller than a Taurus (reviews complained about back seat legroom). Thus, a failure.
It sounded like a pretty good sedan to me. Whenever I hear about what vehicles are popular or not, I get the feeling I was born on the wrong continent.

I owned a 98 Contour and was making a BTTC clone out of it but just putting the Eibach springs on it improved road handeling by at least 35% and it looked just like a 98 Mondeo minus the tail lights of the Mondeo. Never understood why Ford did not try harder to make it Euro spec. only instead of Americanizing it.

Contour is worst car ever. It starts falling apart at 104K miles. I had owned one and it loves to go to service and empty your wallet.

The current Mondeo is actually less interesting to drive, IMHO - I had a chance to rent several of them in Europe - and they did not impress me as the older Contour did - as far as chassis dynamics are concerned.

I have to say that based on glowing reviews I rented a Ford Mondeo (top of the line sports package version) in England almost 4 years ago and was not too impressed with performance/handling either - I preferred the Audi A4 and MB C180 that I normally rented on my trips to Europe.
