first rotary powered deLorean
dunno if this is a repost, but check it out, the first rotary powered deLorean.
ROTARY DELOREAN!!

We've successfully installed a Mazda 3-rotor rotary engine into this car! Rotary people know this engine as the 20B, it is a 1.962 liter engine with sequential twin turbos. This engine was originally made for the Mazda Eunos Cosmo, we picked up a model year 1990. This engine yields about 300HP, and 297ft-lb of torque at 3000RPM. We have not had the time to weigh the car, though the stock Delorean claimed just over a 2700 pound dry weight. We guess that the 2.0 liter rotary and the 2.8L PRV V-6 engine weigh about the same. With this horsepower and low weight, this car really moves!

Hi.
From Wikipedia, the specifications for the STOCK Delorean engine:
Specifications
So, you can see that for the same wight, they have about tripled the horsepower in the car. That is pretty cool...
I drove a Delorean a few times back in the day, and (to be kind), it was not a powerful car by any means.
Also, my Dad had a Volvo 262C of about the same vintage, with the same engine as the Delorean, and it was a slug - could barely accelerate out of it's own way.....
From Wikipedia, the specifications for the STOCK Delorean engine:
Specifications
- Power (DIN): 100 kW (134 hp) at 92 r/s (136 hp at 5,500 rpm) [2]
- Power (SAE): 97 kW (130 hp) at 92 r/s (130 hp at 5,500 rpm)
- Torque (DIN): 215 N·m (159 lb·ft) at 48 r/s
- Torque (SAE): 208 N·m (153 lb·ft) at 48 r/s (153 ft·lbf at 2,750 rpm)
- Compression ratio: 8.8:1
- Bore: 91 mm (3.6 in)
- Stroke: 73 mm (2.9 in)
- Displacement: 2,849 cm³
- Firing order: 1-6-3-5-2-4
- Weight: ~150 kg (331 lb)

The 20B-REW in the Eunos is reported (on several non-Mazda websites*) to weigh 350kg fully-dressed. For comparison, the same websites put a 'racing version' of the 20B at 143kg.
I think what gh8st was quoting was comparing a ~143kg rotary with a ~150kg piston engine.
I have some doubts as to the 350kg number for the 20B (for comparison, a 13G 3-rotor race engine also seems to weigh in at around the 150kg mark).
Hope this helps.

This car was built several years ago. With the original engine, I don't see how it could top 88 mph. This would seem to be supported by the fact that you can't outrun a VW van full of terrorists. The 20B could though.
But the delorean doesn't need to go faster than 88 mph as long as it has it's flux capacitor
But why would you want a car that you had to keep under 88 mph, other than the fact of time travel. Speaking of which... i think my flux capacitor is on the fritz again, can someone help?
Well, Wikipedia is your friend....
A couple of salient points (from my memory):
- Former Big 3 auto exec starts own car company.
- Funding from Canadian and Northern Irish governments
- 1979?
- Car made of unpainted stainless steel (later ones were painted / clearcoated)
- Gull-wing doors.
- Relatively low price (about the same as a BMW or Mercedes of the day).
- Company gets into financial trouble.
- Founder (John DeLorean) busted for millions-dollar drugs sting. Rumor that it was to help bail out the car company.
- Company fails... Causes government scandal in N.Ireland.
- 1982?
- 2008 - another company buys inventory and announces that they will re-start production. Haven't heard anything more.

Ross.... I kid you not!

You can get one today starting at $57,500 (according to the website, at least).
