UK Face-lifted 'Kodo' Miata/MX-5 Coming Soon with CX-5 Fog Lights!

Well it looks like the 2009 (NC2) is about to have a face-lift...lets call it an NC2.5.

Confirmed!..new Miata will have the CX-5 Kodo look and it actually uses the CX-5 Fog Lights!

There were some rumor's from an Aussie poster on the Miata.net forum and how he can't buy a certain MX-5 here in Oz, as production had ceased and talks of an update in a few months time.

Well I did some EPC checking and YES there appears to be an updated MX-5/Miata in the pipeline.

Production Starts for the UK on July 2, 2012 (next week)..so, what are the changes... it all appears to be in the front of the Roadster.

Hood and Hinges have changed (NPY1-52-31X Hood part #, ALL new)
Front Bumper
Front Headlamps and Fog lights.
Front Grille
Fenders remain the same, as to are the Doors and rear 1/4 Panels, Trunk Lid, and Tail Lights.

What I am tipping is perhaps a Kodo look, a squarer line to the front of Hood, remember Fenders are still the same so there can't be any higher side hood line.

No changes in Engines, Chassis, Brakes, Transmissions.

Some minor interior changes, new Steering Wheel and trim colours.

I see this being run out in (launched) the UK ASAP, and perhaps launched in the US for the Fall to take advantage of the warmer weather, and the launch in Australia in Spring/Summer.

A quick re-fresh to compete with the all new ToySub coupe's.

Also, just confirmed...

The new face-lift Miata/MX-5 uses the exact same Mazda CX-5 SUV Round Fog Lights,
Part Number GEG1-51-680B Fog Light Right Hand, GEG1-51-690B FL Left Hand.

So there you have it Miata goes Kodo...CX-5!!

I'm not sure how many find this interesting but I am chief of eating up this data and Ash you are the ultimate Mazda parts investigator

I'm not sure that I see Kodo in this as I also don't see Kodo in the 2012 Mazda 3. The fogs began with the 2011 Mazda 6 by the way

Still, this is fresh news (For those who follow this type of thing).

Hmm, interesting.

Rhetorical: Just a quick 1 year refresh? Or does this imply that the ND is pushed back by at least 1 more year?

Ash's comment has it right I think, just a quick visual lift for a year or two to help compete with FR-S/BRZ. The ND is still on the way (though this makes the timeline a question) and the rotary is still on the way.

Mazda is allowed to do stuff other than rotaries. We need that other stuff to fund the rotary development

Yes, the Fogs began with the North American Mazda 6 only...rest of the world uses GDK5 for the 6.

KODO, compare the Grille's and look at the moustache 50-1T2, whatever this is Kodo-ish or CX-5.

And I agree this is to go until 2015...when the change has to happen.

Different username threw me off for a bit though.

This was posted Sept 2010 on Miata.net so looks like this move has been planned for sometime.

"Mazda's new design language Kodo will find its way into a sportscar even if no RX program is forthcoming, Maeda says. The design chief says that despite "its own history" a next generation MX-5 would embrace the marque's new motif.

"I would like to keep this [Kodo design language consistent across our range] as much as possible. But also the MX-5 has its own design language. We have to incorporate two things at once but not all the elements."

Maeda would not put a timeline on the replacement for the MX-5."

That was theorized to be in reference to the ND, not really the NC, which we can be sure that the ND will definitely be Kodo, this is the first information that indicates that it will get to the NC before the NC is replaced.

Typical Mazda...the Kodo look will go through all their models, they always do it.

Just like the smiley RX-8,3,MX-5, etc, etc.

I do not love the ToySub car but I do love that is making other manufactures respond with a new offering or upgrading an existing car in their lineup.

I wish they would not do it. I never liked the SUVs and Miata taking on features of the RX8.

Anyway..here is one...what is a DHS Sensor, this is all new?

This new MX-5 has 4 of them at the front under Hood?,

I thought it 'may' have been something to do with a pedestrian air bag system similar to what Volvo have/are doing?
Where the hood bounces up with small air bag underneath hood, but I can find any new airbag in parts EPC.

So what is a DHS Sensor...(4)

There is also the normal Air Bag Crash Sensor behind the bumper not shown here.

Found more on the DHS.... System....

I was wondering with the 4 Sensors what actually popped the Hood Up, and here they are ..... 2 Actuators (NP32) that do the job..

Once activated the area near hinges or windscreen of hood pops up about 3 inches at a guess.

This DHS is becoming mandatory in so many countries (obviously the UK is one of them)...this may not be seen in the US or AUST.?

The refresh is not as dramatic of a change as I was expecting. Not sure what to think now because I was expecting a much different look.

The big change is probably less than 2 years away though when the 4th generation car is introduced.

With more safety engineering that applies for the future, the more reverse engineering I'll do to dilute the complexity.
