Evo might have to go?

I hate to see a good horse leave the stable, but it looks like the Evo might need to go. I drive the Legacy every day now. But what if I sold the Evo and then took my money and the Legacy GT to a Subaru dealership for a drive in an '08 STi. Initially I'd lose performance going to the new STi but I'm not worried about that. The big thing is potential. What do I lose going from an '05 Evo VIII RS to an '08 STi - or do I lose anthing at all with the platform?

Or is there another car out there I need to look at? I debated posting this on the Evo or STi forums instead but, as ironic it is, that's the worst place to post a thread like this. So anways it would come down to potential for me. I need four doors, power, handling and some tuning potential.

IMHO if you want it now, and are looking for the best power/handling/potential - allroundpackage, I would look into the evo X. If on the other hand you are patient and are willing to wait, then I would wait to see the 2010 scoobies.

Now referring back to your question- will you loose anything by going from evo XIII to 08sti? My answer is - plenty. But then again it all depends on what you are looking to gain... I would assume that you are looking for a middle ground between performance and comfort, to substitute for the two cars currently owned. In that case the 08sti, might be a pretty good choice, it will offer less on the performance side than your XIII, but more than the legacy, while offering a more refined ride. However (flame me all you want), the evo XIII reigns superior to 08sti in pretty much every way.

Again, if it were up to me I would wait to see new scoobs, otherwise if I had to make a choice now I would go for evoX.

get the 370 z ;)

alienRX8 01-09-2009 07:38 AM

I would wait. Subaru updated the WRX and it is not faster by .1 sec than the new STI, so my guess is they are upping the HP on the STI as well to offset this. So I would wait a little bit.

I second that!:)

Screw AWD, unless you live in Maine or close to Canada, get yourself a sports car.

dozer 01-09-2009 09:35 AM

yeah get the z...you live in CALI

dillsrotary 01-09-2009 09:59 AM

I saw a brand new STI white with factory gold rims, it looks like a million bucks. Now i am ignorant as to the potential of the current sti's but i do know that the evo x's are quite mod friendly.

Steiner 01-09-2009 10:16 PM

I really need 4 doors guys.

ShinkaTeen 01-09-2009 11:14 PM

evo X.

XxSaMiRxXS 01-10-2009 12:20 AM

get the EVO X, its awd, four door, good looks and its fast

blackenedwings 01-10-2009 12:33 AM

Wait, you already have an Evo VIII and want a tunable 4 door car with AWD? ...You own one! Evo VIIIs can make stupid power with the right mods and god knows it looks better than the '08 STi which looks like a bag of ass. If you really want to upgrade the car, get the Evo X.

kersh4w 01-10-2009 12:34 AM

bmw m5.

SayNoToPistons 01-10-2009 12:57 AM

A 335i gets my vote.

alienRX8 01-10-2009 11:10 AM

If you are going to a EvoX, just stay with your current evo. If you want the hatchback, then you should go STI. But if its just cause of the 4 doors, just stay with your current evo. They are better IMO than the X.

I know that Subaru has been having issues with the power plan in the WRX/STI for the last 3 model years where they have bearings failing in the first 2-3,000 miles so I would be leary about heading that direction. Mitsu builds a better product IMO.

I've never heard anything about this. I do know that some of the stage 2 STi's have been seeing issues with the pistons. Which bearings were people having trouble with?

alienRX8 01-10-2009 05:32 PM

I read the bearings thing too and there is even a video on youtube, but apparently it was a bad batch after that people have had 0 problems.

bose 01-10-2009 06:41 PM

The early batch of 08 turbocharged Subies all had issues with piston 4. A tuning issue when it started happening they halted all sales and reflashed them all. Since they haven had a problem, my buddy has an 06 WRX that makes great power very reliably.

Evo X,,, dont get an ugly and heavy 370,,, yuck

alienRX8 01-10-2009 07:31 PM

hmm ugly and heave 370z that does 13.4 in the 1/4 mile or heavy and cheap rental interior mitsu that does 13.8 in the 1/4 mile?

Rotr8 01-10-2009 08:59 PM

ITs the Japanese Mustang,,,, the Evo will smash a Z on a track,,, not too many people with an 8 care about straightline speeds, and he said he needs 4 doors,,, and yes it is heavy 3400lbs for a 2 seater, thats a reason they had to bump the VQ up to 332hp,,,

AngryBumblebee 01-10-2009 09:35 PM

2010 Speed3's are supposed to have a new turbo 2.5 L

Blackout04RX 01-10-2009 09:48 PM

The Evo you currently have is miles more developed and worked with then the EvoX or STi. I had and sold an STi, because once you got past the initial euphoria it wasn't built as well. They have definately limitations with the block, where as Mitsu worked extensively on making sure that the roof of potential was higher. Either stay with what you have. Price range would change what you are looking for in AWD and 4 door. if you can swing 35k, Audi A4 2.0T is a fantastic vehicle

Rotr8 01-10-2009 10:57 PM

what about the new Lancer RalliArt it has the EVO 9's powertrain and AWD and its a whole lot cheaper than the X and like Blackout said that powerplant has a huge aftermarket for it...

alienRX8 01-10-2009 11:38 PM

^^^^NO, the new lancer ralliart sucks. Belive me I drove one. If you are going for the evo get the evo not the wannabe.
