Engine vs Motor

I say "tuh-mey-toh", you say "tuh-mah-toh" :Peace:

I say "engine", you say "motor"

Engine: "A motor car (automobile) has a starter motor and motors to drive pumps (fuel, power steering, etc) – but the power plant that propels the car is called an engine."

Let the friendly discussions begin :) ...... :nono: :flamed: please ......

I use the terms interchangeably. When I'm back home with my VERY southern family, I generally say motor. Otherwise I usually say engine.

I use it interchangeably too cuz we have them hybrids and electric cars now

This thread topic is like a debate on calling someone gay or homo...

Easy_E1 04-23-2009 02:18 AM

I was raised that it's an internal combustion engine. Electric is a motor.

Huey52 04-23-2009 09:24 AM

I always call it engine, but then, I'm an Engineer. ;)

rotarygod 04-23-2009 09:34 AM

Engine? Motor? I thought we had Doritos rotating inside of peanuts. There's actually a name for it?

CyberPitz 04-23-2009 09:57 AM

I usually say Engine, but I still randomly say Motor. They are the same thing to me!

EDZRIDE 04-23-2009 10:21 AM

An engine is a device which produces kinetic energy from a fuel source; a motor is a device which produces kinetic energy from other forms of energy such as electricity, a flow of hydraulic fluid or compressed air.

Huey52 04-23-2009 10:25 AM

Nah, we all know engines and motors are just glorified heat pumps. ;)

Motor is typically more associated with electric's. 'Motivator' derivative and the electrial opposite of Generator.

nycgps 04-23-2009 10:29 AM

I called it piston.

Tell that to the Ford Motor Company.

shazy 04-23-2009 09:20 PM

Motor sounds very southern and only muscle car owners use that term.

But for electric stuff I say motor because it sounds appropriate (same thing as Easy said.)

ASH8 04-23-2009 09:48 PM

The Brits call a MOTOR the whole car, How's your Bloody MOTA

Wait a minute, this is all messed up now. I've been putting "mota" oil :shocking: in my engine instead of peanut oil.
