Engine Replacement Costs? 2004 Chevy Aveo
My friend drives the biggest POS and the POS needs a new engine at 91K...
It looks like his 2004 Chevrolet Aveo needs a new 1.6L engine at 91K miles and I was just curious if anyone has any thoughts on labor cost ballpark for replacing a small engine?
And when you replace an engine - are there add'l parts that need to be bought and replaced?
He's deciding whether to just toss the heap and buy a better used car (hard pressed to get worse).

Thanks

I assume an Aveo is a FWD car? If it is, you have to pull the axles out of the front diff so you can pull the trans/engine as one unit. I always found that a pain. The size of the engine doesn't really change anything. It's probably $1000-$1500 in labor. Generally, there is a shop manual that lists base hours for a job. Most shops will charge right out of that book whether they can do it in half the time or not.
The new Aveo's have a 100,000 mile warrantee right? Guess he has the older 60k warrantee (or had). That sucks. How much does a new engine cost?

Replace it with a smaller engine, a 1.3l 13b. It should be cheaper right? (J/k)
And yeah, the cost of replacing the engine is probably more than the value of the car. My '02 corolla's 1.8L engine rebuilding at 79,000 in 2004 cost the warranty company ~$3,500, including parts. Labor is a tossup, since they had my car for 2 months to complete the 8 hour job.

Just toss it and get another car.
Unless you(or your friend) can do it yourself, it takes a lot more work to pull FWD engine out than RWD. which means more labor cost.
IF your friend wants to keep it for some weird reason, find some used engines at junk yard, they will probably give it to ya for maybe 1-2 K (cuz Aveo is a POS car with POS engine), then do it yourself.
but if its me, I rather just toss it, get a few hundred bux back from the scrap metal and buy myself a used Corolla instead.

Well my friend was suckered into it at a Chevy dealer without telling me that he needed a car. Too late for me to stop it. I'd like to see him get rid of the POS. I think he overpaid for it too making matters worse. A crappy Cobalt would have been better than an Aveo.
It is FWD and his year had the 5/60K powertrain. It hasn't been that reliable (no surprise). A new timing belt was needed at 30K under warranty.
He's looking at used 99-03 Mazda Proteges.

Yeah the cobalt is actually not bad if you are in the market for civics and corrollas and want to save a few grand up front. Get one with a good warranty and it's actually a pretty ok car. i drive one...

He's using the mechanic that works on my Sentra (not my 8) and it's going to cost about $2K for an engine with 50K miles out of a wrecked Aveo. He decided to go for the engine replacement instead of junking the piece of junk.
Engine was about $916 and labor about $750 plus about $200 additional to do timing belt and other tune up stuff on the replacement engine.
