edmunds latest RX 7 news
Which direction Mazda will choose is still unclear, but the less powerful, less expensive option seems to make more sense in the current economic climate.
This seems to go with the new lighter/less expensive miata coming about the same time.

inexpensive, not-so-powered rx-7 will cut sales to ND IMHO*.
better do a small numbers, hi-power rx-7 hi-tech.
*why do that kind of 7? to go under toyobaru, Hyundai and Silvia?...... pointless. at that level of price customers of that kind of car still prefer pistons engine...more familiar.
better excite aficionados with a lightweight 350hp beast.

Put the current 232hp Series II renesis into a sleek styled 2-seat sports that's around the weight of a MX-5, and they'll have a winner on their hands. Whenever the 16X is production ready, they could release that as the top-of-the-line performance model a few years later.

So if they used the current Renesis in a Miata-weight car, what do you think the mpg improvement would be?

With the subtracted weight, I'd say a Renny would get an extra 2-3mpg hi way, and 1-2 city. The sad part is this would put it equal to or less than the advertised #s for the RX-8.
yeah i don't think it will happen either. Also why the hell spend so much resources to develop an engine for a niche market which won't have the reliability/economy of a piston motor anyway if it's just gunna have basically the same bhp figures as the current renesis? What is all the money going to if it doesn't really perform better and still gets presumably shitty mileage/reliability versus a piston engine? For all the wait and hype and resources put into it, why not just give it some actual power so at least I will have incentive to get it; even if the motor blows up later on. It's a car for enthusiasts.

They keep mentioning 2 power ranges. This could mean 2 rotary options. Earlier reports were that there would be an RX7 2 seater, and RX9 4 seater/4door coupe with conventional doors. Speculation aside, I love the buzz. It seems to be gaining momentum by the day, much like the GT-R prior to its release.
