Sounds like there will be 2 engine options available, much like the Genesis. Maybe they release a standard NA 23-25k version with 250hp, and an FI MS variant arounf 35k out the gate.

Which direction Mazda will choose is still unclear, but the less powerful, less expensive option seems to make more sense in the current economic climate.

This seems to go with the new lighter/less expensive miata coming about the same time.

i like the small light cheap one. $25k seems too fantastic, but if true i'd be very tempted to be one of the first ones to buy one new

inexpensive, not-so-powered rx-7 will cut sales to ND IMHO*.

better do a small numbers, hi-power rx-7 hi-tech.

*why do that kind of 7? to go under toyobaru, Hyundai and Silvia?...... pointless. at that level of price customers of that kind of car still prefer pistons engine...more familiar.

better excite aficionados with a lightweight 350hp beast.

A repost, but they put it under general automotive. So, you would be more correct anyway.

Put the current 232hp Series II renesis into a sleek styled 2-seat sports that's around the weight of a MX-5, and they'll have a winner on their hands. Whenever the 16X is production ready, they could release that as the top-of-the-line performance model a few years later.

Honestly, it could look like an FD and I would still buy it. That car is classic, and I always loved the door handles, it just adds to the flow so well.

You are trying to say that I would post in the wrong forum?

So if they used the current Renesis in a Miata-weight car, what do you think the mpg improvement would be?

I'm sure Autoblog just gets their info from other sites. It seems that they like to add things into their articles that are totally false. It isn't the first time they've done this, they do it quite often now.

For example, they turned this from Inside line

into this

Wtf??? Inside line states there are issues with fuel economy and only the potential for 350hp. But Autublog says it achieves superb fuel economy and has already pumped out 350hp.

With the subtracted weight, I'd say a Renny would get an extra 2-3mpg hi way, and 1-2 city. The sad part is this would put it equal to or less than the advertised #s for the RX-8.

Where can I place a bet that the new RX-7 will not happen?

I'm willing to bet up to $1,000.

yeah i don't think it will happen either. Also why the hell spend so much resources to develop an engine for a niche market which won't have the reliability/economy of a piston motor anyway if it's just gunna have basically the same bhp figures as the current renesis? What is all the money going to if it doesn't really perform better and still gets presumably shitty mileage/reliability versus a piston engine? For all the wait and hype and resources put into it, why not just give it some actual power so at least I will have incentive to get it; even if the motor blows up later on. It's a car for enthusiasts.

Seeing as it hasn't been released yet, it would be a bad idea in general to just assume how reliable it will be. Sure, the rotary has a bad track record, but it seems like mazda has learned quite a bit as I haven't heard of engine issues nearly as often as I did prior to the recalls and release of the 09. Things change, so maybe they're trying to bring the next rotary to market as being the better engine. All your comments basically ignore the idea of the article. Sure it says they might be working on a lower hp version, but it could have a better delivery of that power plus more torque. They also mentioned a higher powered engine which is significantly more powerful than the renesis.

They keep mentioning 2 power ranges. This could mean 2 rotary options. Earlier reports were that there would be an RX7 2 seater, and RX9 4 seater/4door coupe with conventional doors. Speculation aside, I love the buzz. It seems to be gaining momentum by the day, much like the GT-R prior to its release.
