It'll probably drive like a tank
Definitely something to look forward to. Hopefully we'll see similar results for a new RX car.
Any news on the power the newer miata will make? I know it's never been a power based platform, but if they up the power at all, it will be one hell of a performer with the weight loss.

Certainly good news if the RX7 will be on this chassis. Shouldnt gain much weight, if any.

An under 2600 lb RX7 would be amazing even with present hp. Extra torque, lighter weight and better fuel economy would be the right recipe.

Yup. I would trade my 8 for it.
But I'd rather give my wife the 8 and trade her van for it.
This possibility is one of the reasons I put my Renesis Miata plans on hold. IF I can get it OEM with a warranty and without the blood and tears, I'll be on the preorder.
Only if it was using a Renesis2 though. If they put the 16X in, it will be even better, but I'd wait for 2nd model year.

just saw a similar article on LLN.
great to hear this. but i wish they dropped wont to 1.6L (i guess to up fuel economy, although i think 50mpg is a bit wishful), and keep the 2.0L - then they'd have the fun-to-drive but still great gas mileage along with a model that takes advantage of a better power-to-weight ratio.

Yes...2200 LBS...that is 1000 Kilos, the current NC is about 1170 Kilos...
I would like to see how Mazda will lose 300 lbs, without a significant reduction in vehicle size..
We already see 6+ footers in the US complaining about interior space.
So a smaller shorter Trunk?
A Shorter Hood length?
Road to "roof" dimensions will remain the same because of regulations.
Will be an interesting look...more of a square Box..

Mazda: Lets make the ultimate sportscar! I know... lets throw a rotary into our new miata chassis. Woo hoo 250 hp (231 corrected) hp on 800kg.
Vehicle Safety Association: Oh no.... Mazda made the Miata too light, its not safe. The rotary engine hung too low in the front hood, thats not safe too.
Treehugger Association: Noooo... rotary engine, they got no piston... gas goes in n comes out with apex seal... very polluting... they drink lots of oil like water... very thirsty... we love our trees.
Mazda: Screw it.... lets just chuck this 1.6 in there and call it a day...

I just test drove the Mazda2, and was surprised at how big it was compared with how small it seems to be in videos, pictures, etc... Incredibly light though, bodes well for them keeping the MX-5 weight down.
