Exclamation CRV and Maxima Head On Collision (Pics)

I was following a Honda CRV on my way to get something to eat and something terrible happened. I was about 4 car lengths behind her, then the next thing I know she starts going to the left and then BOOM. She runs head on with a Maxima.

I pulled over real fast, picked up my phone dialed 911 and told them what happened. As soon as I get off the phone I run over to the cars and something weird happened. It was a surreal feeling. I couldn't hear anything expect the two women(one in each car) crying for help. My heart just dropped. I just tried to comfort them until the Medics arrived(which was pretty fast).

It was weird cause I saw it coming but couldn't do anything about it. She never put her brakes on, was not going to turn or anything, just slammed head on right into the Maxima. I guess she just dozed off at the wheel.

Both of them were hurt pretty bad. They were taken out on a stretcher with braces on their necks. Its crazy, how in a split second your life can change totally.

I must say the Honda CVR held up better in the crash(though both are totaled).

I didn't have my Digital on me but here are some I took from my phone:

I worry about those sudden head ons the most. The ones that cause some of the most injuries and one is often unable to avoid like the Maxima occupants.

Fortunately with modern safety advances, a head on at city speeds should be survivable with some injuries possible.

atleast no one was killed... yeah, the sudden head ons are the worst things because those are unavoidable for the victim... hopefully they will recover fully. Modern equipment really does help these days...

It might be scary to see the whole left front of the Maxima gone in person, but it crumpled a lot from the pics, thats a good thing, and the driver side of the cabin seems to be fully intact.

naw I saw her head the whole time. Her windows weren't tinted so I could see right in. Like I said, I knew it was going to happen before it actually did.

3 out of the last 4 times i went to TN i had a car flip right in front of or next to me. one time I got it on video.. I don't have it with me I'll post it tonight.

this guy was weaving all over driving through jacksonville. I was in the back and my brother in law was driving. this guy almost hits a 60ft horse trailer and my BIL says "enough of this this guy is gonna cause a wreck" and passes him i tuned on my camera and right when i looked out the back window the guy heads into the median overcorrects and does 5 flips though the air and lands in the trees. we pull over call 911 and right when we get ready to drive back we find the guys dog running down the road.
highway patrol and sheriffs show up, we tell them what happened and then I tell them i have video of it. you should seen their faces. the sheriffs end up calling all the other deputies to come see it. there's us and 15 cops on the back of a highway patrol car watching this car flip over and over again.

I actually drive the same model year CR-V (same colour too coincidentally). The crash safety rating is marginal at best and some are even below marginal for almost all areas. I'm glad they weren't more seriously injured than they were. Damn, it must have been a surreal moment for you.

I'd agree with that assessment. I'd rather be in the latest Maxima then that first generation CR-V. The following generations of CR-Vs are much better from a safety viewpoint.

As another poster said, better that the car looks crushed in a controlled manner than intact so the impact forces are absorbed by the car and not the passengers.

From the pics, it looks like it was the worse type of head on: the offset on the driver's side. Those are the ones that wreak havoc with cars in those Insurance Institute tests. Cars that do well in a full frontal often had major problems with offset. Fortunately, with the offset tests, manufacturers have improved performance in that area and side impacts as well.

I think the Maxima fared well even though it looks bad. It crunched right up to the windshield, but the passenger compartment is intact. Not sure about the footwell though.

Last year during the Hurricane Rita evacuation from Houston, my sister in law and her son got in a head on collision after she fell asleep. She hit an oncoming semi and both her and her 10 year old son were killed. One moment is all it takes.

Yeah the inside looked ok. I mean there were some parts of the console broken off. But if you saw the engine you would have thought it would've crushed her. I mean it looked like 3/4 of the Maxima's Engine was gone.

Everybody is different. Probably a good thing to keep a bottle of NO DOZ in the glove compartment just in case.
