Had one as a rental last month. Wasn't impressed, my biggest complaint was the automatic transmission which shifted way too early, leaving the car without power (Chevy trying to save gas?). I liked the previous Camry rental I had much better.

I don't think it was a 2008. They went on sale to the general public on November 2nd, and they aren't going to be offered to rental companies any time soon, since GM is still making "Malibu Classics" for rental fleet duty.

Yep. I neglected the "new" part of the question, but my guess is the tranny still sucks unless they've gone with a CVT in which case my opinion would then be it "really" sucks.

Not much going in the looks department but it doesn't look offensive or anything.
I hope it sells because i do not want GM to bite it before they can roll out their new RWD sedan platform. (G8, Impala, Camaro)

They went from the old 4AT to the newer 6AT, for the 6 cylinder at least. That engine/transmission combo is supposed to be extremely nice, though I haven't driven a car with it yet, so I can't throw in my own two cents. The 4 cyl still uses the older transmission, though, so it's probably still a little balky. I had a previous generation Malibu as a rental once and thought it was fairly decent, but I wasn't expecting a whole lot out of a 4 cyl midsized sedan. It compared well with a 4 cyl Galant that I recently drove, though, and the Mitsu was a brand new car with only a few dozen miles on the odometer.

The back end might look odd......but there is nothing odd looking about the interior. Camry and Accord owners wish they had an interior this nice:

gm's really trying hard to beef up the brand image..
i think they are really headed in the right direction because the malibu is their bread and butter car.
