Question Carbon parts fading over time?

I see carbon parts all the time and some of them are faded and feel gritty to the touch. Just out of curiosity is that even supposed to happen?

its because they use a gel coat on them. if you don't apply a clear coat or some kind of protectant it gets oxidized.

Eh? So should I put a clearcoat on my new hood so it doesn't get messed?

you don't have to, but its not a bad idea. a clearcoat is much better that a gelcoat.

the gel coat will break down and yellow over time... get it clear coated asap unless you like the yellow tinted look

If you leave your car outdoors, it also gets windblasted over time unless you apply a durable clearcoat. Sanding the gel to a glossy finish is not that easy because the gel itself is too pliable to get sanded.
