Personally, I think the 5 Series GT is a really awkward looking BMW. I would have got a 5 Series sedan or wagon before I got the GT, but as long as he's happy!

I kind of thought that too, but it looks much better in person and it's one of those designs that grows on you. I like the look of it a lot more than when I first saw pictures of it.

I know my dad would not want the wagon, even if it was available here. Also, the normal 5 series is a smaller car and and doesn't offer some of the advantages of the GT, so I wouldn't really consider them to be directly comparable. He definitely would have picked something else over the 5 series sedan.

Like you said, it's what he thinks that matters at the end of the day. I really had no clue he'd like it this much when I first showed him some of these options. After test driving it, his mind seemed made up.
