Barnes said Mazda's Irvine, California-based North American unit decided not to donate some of the vehicles to auto-repair training programs at technical schools, as O'Sullivan initially had said might happen.

Some components will be salvaged and sent to U.S. and Canadian dealers for use as replacement parts, Barnes said. Many materials will also be recycled by the company, he said.

update today from my inquiries with Mazda- none of the MX-5s on board were PRHTs. They hadnt started shipping them to the states yet when that ship left port
