Bugatti Veyron's "Record"

Publicity stunt.
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/57...ph_record.html

I think the million dollar thing is a dud from the start, and 6 years late down the road, it still is a dud waiting to be released. This crap still have problems beating the McLaren F1, a car made 15 years ago.

They can say all the crappy "Top Speed" they want, Id rather be in the cockpit of a McLaren or a Koenigsegg rather than this. Heck Id use the 1.5 million dollar (Price of this car) to buy BOTH the McLaren and Koenigsegg over this.

The quad turbo engine is a meltdown waiting to happen.
The tires only last less than 5000 miles... its a special tire too!
The spoiler rises like 20 cms on an ugly multi link arm alot uglier than the concept 3 years ago, they added the width and height to add stability after the car spun out at Laguna Seca.

And the most laughable of which is the "top speed mode" :D
Gotta be the stupidest thing Ive heard... put the key in a special slot, the car lowers itself, the spoiler rises... (plays transformer autobot song)... check tire pressure, engine temperature.
Only if everything is right then you can try to match this "advertised" speed of 248mph (400kph) by going in a straight line... LOL... what a moron.
The "high speed mode" disengages when you press the brake...
Then its back to the "normal" Veyron with 375kph -claimed- top speed...

BTW
The Mac and Koenigsegg both had their official record speed in Nardo which is a high speed oval, over an extended period of time.

That Veyron test is done at VW's internal Ehra-Lessien test facility... with an 8 mile straightaway, which gives them what? 3 seconds of top speed and they had to go brake before the car spins out of control... Again?

Id love to see the Veyron try Nardo like the big boys... hey you can even test the crash reliability too... since Im 100% sure the Veyron would kiss Nardo's wall at their "claimed" top speed.

Freakin ridiculous if they allow that as an "official top speed"... Id get Koenigsegg to run in Salt Flats straight to blow that away.

Id put the handle-able figure of the Veyron at max, 350kph, maybe less.
Why no Nurburgring test?

Why would anyone buy this crap when they can get an Enzo or Koenigsegg and hit 350 anytime they choose?

The McLaren set its record at VW test track, and it still took some time to shoot down the straight at 240 mph. (The car wasn't even shifted out of 6th gear, so starting from 215 kph to top speed wasn't as fast as it could have been) The car covered 3 miles at speeds exceeding 240 kph.
The F1 covered the whole straight in 90 seconds/9km ~220mph

The W16 has been rumored to be able to produce 1200+ hp, so it isn't overstressed making 987hp.

First of all the mclaren broke the speed record in 98. Unless you are posting from the future thats only 7 years.

Also it took Koenigsseg almost as long to beat the speed record, they only set the speed record by 0.3 mph in February. The Bugatti thumped it by over 8 mph

You do realize that mclaurens are now selling for well over $1 million, and the Koenigsseg is over $600,000.

Well the McLaren is released 1991, 14 years ago, ok I missed a year, big deal.
It was conceived a couple of years before that anyway.
I did say a car "made" 15 years ago, wasnt even mentioning the record.

The Koenigsegg beat that record, in Nardo, thats a constant turning oval, with the steering wheel kept at a constant 30 degrees... you can appreciate how much grip and aerodynamics matters there. Its done with the car "out of the box" standard engine, michelin tires, suspension height, etc. they added rollcage and extinguisher even, for safety, that added alot of weight.
http://www.koenigsegg.com/record_pressrelease.asp
The top speed is done at only 6700 rpm too, the car can do more, but the driver isnt going to push his luck with the grip.

As a comparison, the McLaren has a (unofficial) record of 372kmh in Nardo, thats 14kmh slower than its straight line record in VWs track. If you added that 14, to the Koenigseggs Nardo record to simulate its straight line top speed, that would make it 402 at least.

It does it, standard too, anytime you want, no need to push buttons, no need to turn off your safeties, you still have your DSC, ABS, etc at that advertised top speed.

The Veyron has had high speed stability problems throughout its development, this "top speed" mode feels like its a rush job, their engineers gave up with making the car reach its top speed and be drivable, so instead they just added this "mode" and tell its buyers... hey you wanna go 400, have a 3mile straight, then you can... oh and dont press the brakes.
Hopefully that will stop more of its pre-buyers from suing them or withdrawing their deposits. (remember Jaguar XJ220?)

Oh and the McLaren sells under a mil, only a few pristine models will fetch you a mil, maybe the GT models yes.
http://www.qv500.com/mclarenf1mr.php
Thats what? around 1.5 mil right? ok 1.6, 1.7? thats what? 10 percent? cmon.

Still id work to get that extra 100k and buy both my previous choice instead of this junk.
