Looks to be a great car. Sounds like a bit more power to set it apart from the 135i might be nice, but still sounds like a good package. I might be wrong, but it sounds like the same engine as in the 335i and 135i which is why it seems like they could have pulled a bit more out of the engine. Wondering if it's all the same or if they beefed it up a bit (in terms of potential power from aftermarket tuning).
Definitely would love to test drive one to see how it feels with the upgraded suspension. I really like what they did with the body... much more appealing than the regular 1 in my opinion.

i'm sure they could have gotten more hp out of it, but then they're approaching an m3 killer within their own company, so they probably had to limit it on purpose.
i THINK it has the twin turbos, so not the new single turbo they're going to, which is surprising to me.
i also think it's the same hp rating as the z4is, which is the only legit beef i think...that it should be 135is with an M package. but i think the M enhancements and borrowed parts from the m3 will make it MUCH more track worthy that all the 135 owners are realizing.

Does anyone know whether BMW has found a fix for the high pressure fuel pump problem?
There was a large recall on the 1 series (130,000 to 150,000 cars, I believe) because the fuel pump was cutting out unexpectedly: an annoying, possibly dangerous, issue.
I believe BMW tried to redesign the pump but that didn't work. My understanding is that the recall may involve, not a redesigned fuel pump, but de-tuning the engine to help resolve the problem.

This looks like a great car, it looks a lot like the E46 M3 in terms of styling and size, and this is a good thing. The E90's M3's have pretty much become German muscle cars with good handling. This 1 M Coupe looks like a real driver's car. I can't say I would ever buy one as I'm going to try to jump this price level with my next car. But my first impressions are this is my new favorite car in the 40k-50k range.

DONE
oh wait, i guess there is no current z4m, and no 7series m (but they do have the alpina b7 which is one of the sexiest luxury cars ever), and no x3m, but i'm sure that will change since they just released the new one and we already have the x5m and x6m.

Was reviewed by Chris Harris of Evo and Pistonheads couple of weeks ago. The usual M BMW of the current mold, vague steering, heavy weight and an un-invovling drive. The engine still feels like a diesel and tops of 6500rpm.
And wait for it, I will to put money down that it will cook its brakes on the track in the usual M style.
A pure fanboi car, drivers see through the media hype.
P.S.
All the changes they put on it show what the 1 series truly is ... It understeers, completely uninvolving to drive and the electronic diff will cook the rear brakes on the track. Why would the ultimate driving machine not have an lsd in the first place? Why would it come with run flats? Why does it weight 1500kg? I think the current company would not even know how to put together an E30 M3 (and therefore should be banned from mentioning it in their press releases)

Look at the pistonheads review and read between the lines. I referred to the reviews as this topic being old news.
Harris of late likes to give good press rather then provide a proper review.
I remember how much hype there was with the 135i, I bought the hype and finally got to drive the car. The only reason that it had positive reviews is that the bar is now set rather low.
And most M cars while being impressive on paper are not involving. Elise / Exige and the GT3 & GT RS are proper drivers cars that ouze with feel and delicacy.
And yes I do have a bias against the current M cars, wish BMW wake up, drops the weight and the gadgets and give us a no no-nonsese drivers car. Instead they give us the M X6 and will probably put an M badge on that horrendous 5 GT next.

BMW and Lotus are not exactly a fair comparison. Even the older M3's and such had more features than a Lotus does. An elise is half the weight of every past M3 (with the E30 being the exception). If BMW were to put a 1 or 3 series car in the $100K+ range, I don't think it would be out of the question to be competitive with a GT3.
It might not be the perfect driving feel you're looking for, but the performance is there.

You are not getting my point. It is about the philosophy, the approach. BMW does not believe that a proper car is going to be profitable. That all they have to do is continue marketing hard and go in the "efficient dynamics" crap.
Cutting engineering, putting crap like electronic gizmos instead of proper lsd, run flat tires...
You don't need to make a car cost 100k to make it a drivers car. Look at the original miata. The rx8 also shows it, while it does not have allot of steering feel it feel great comparing to most bmws, is very tossable and allows you to be involved.
BMW does have some expensive cars like the m6 but they are nowhere close (I know it is a gt rather than a true sports car). What I admire about the gt3 is the approach to the car. It is pure undiluted driving joy, same with the original miata, same with the elise and probably some other cars.
I am a member of the BMW club so I can do their track days. This comes with the benefit of their "Roundel" magazine half of which is devoted to complaints about "bmw lossing the plot" etc. I am sick of reading it so I wish they wake up and change their approach. I think there is market for a proper BMW drivers car or a least an option. Kind of like the e46 csl but without the crazy price tag.
Start with a good chassis, don't set it up to understeer, give it a NA engine, lots of steering feel, a proper lsd, give the option of no electronic seats, gizmos or other added weight... Kinda of like the 8 but with more raw power.
Instead they are toying around. The M division was held back on the last Z4 M coupe, this 1 Series is another half effort (that btw has been done to begin with by TC Kline way back so there was not need to wait for it sans the front facia).

Just found the top picture tweaked to show what it will look like in black and white and figured I would post... I like the design. And it looks like they chose not to put as many gadgets and buttons in the interior as they have been in most of their cars lately, which I think looks really good. A lot cleaner and less busy looking. I'll post a pic of it too...
