Question Autocross?

I'm new here (and a new driver) and somebody suggested me to try out autocrossing to see how much I suck at driving. Can I do it in an automatic Accord?

you CAN do it an an A/T accord but I don't see you being very competitve. Not sure if Accords are ready for that kind of abuse

usually you have to work the course.
When your group isn't on the course, you're the guy setting up cones.

That was me.

You don't need to be competitive to learn - really, I suggested attending an autocross in order to learn vehicle dynamics and control. Plus it'll take the edge off the ego you have as a new driver (that's what it did for me at least), which is a very good thing. You'll be less apt to do silly new driver things when you can let most of them out at an autocross.

Check out your local SCCA chapter they'll probably be the easiest way for you to get into autox. Try to bring a friend with, the waiting and corner work can get boring without someone to talk to.

People hit cones all the time...don't worry about that, even the Pros will hit cones every now and then...But taking your accord out there is fine as long as it will be stable. A friend of mine took his accord out last thursday and he was fine. There was also a Dodge Caravan...yes...a VAN! that AutoX'ed last thursday as well..

Man, I should start stealing road cones off the road whenever I can so I can set up my own "make believe" autoX event in an empty parkinglot on the weekend

Really. A minivan. Was this an SCCA sanctioned event?

Yeah it was run by the SCCA. It was actually a friend of mine's brother. I brought my friend out because he is a photographer, his brother came along and drove the minivan. And for some odd reason decided to enter the race...I couldn't stop laughing while he was driving.

Last time I checked vans, mini vans, and most SUVs were not permitted to run on the course. Those vehicles tend to be too top heavy and the probability of roll overs is too dangerous. I'm surprised that they would allow this at an SCCA event, they are very serious about the rules.

To the OP,

As long as you think your car is up to the challenge then go for it. There's no shame in the game. Everyone has to start from somewhere.

I was surprised they let him run too. He was in HS-Novice. And wow was he slow haha. I dont think he had to worry about rolling because he was going sloooowww.

I'm pretty certain SUVs aren't allowed, except for semi-SUVs, like Subaru Forester. Those are surprisingly fast around cones.

I don't know about minivans. Never saw one run a course.

Not surprising at all. It's an Impreza with a lift kit and some boxy body panels.
