The thundering sounds of Australia’s V8-powered racecars will soon be heard in the U.S.A. as Texas Governor Rick Perry and Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, announced today a five-year agreement to bring the famed Australian V8 Supercar series to the new Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas beginning in 2013.
"The addition of V8 Supercars into our lineup at Circuit of The Americas will add to what we already know will be a rich and exhilarating fan experience," said Steve Sexton, President of Circuit of The Americas.

Under the agreement, the new racetrack in southeast Austin, which is still under construction, will host two annual 124-mile (200 kilometers) races for the V8 Supercar Championship.

Formerly known as the Australian Touring Car Championship, the current series was inaugurated in 1993 and branded as "V8 Supercars" in 1997. The participating cars are based on modified versions of Australia’s Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon sedans, and all run on 85 percent CSR Ethanol.

I think this is very cool - like NASCAR on twisties.
I hope it catches on.

alnielsen 07-01-2011 10:39 AM

DTM will be coming here too. F1 wants two races here. Seems everybody wants to go road racing in the U.S.

Mr.ThunderMakeR 07-01-2011 11:18 AM

This is a good news! I doubt I will actually go to Texas to watch, but still good news. It seems like V8 Supercars would be the most appealing road racing series to all those dumb NASCAR fans. Hopefully it will make road racing more popular in the US.

Mazmart 07-01-2011 11:36 AM

I think I will spend the money to see the last year of F1 V8s in TX while they still make sweet music.

Paul.

Oh that's right. FI V6s just don't sound the same.

Wow, didn't know liking a certain sport made someone dumb

I prefer NASCAR over road racing because seldom any passing in road racing, not exciting to me at all. Regardless, to each their own.

Anyhow, talked to an Aussie when I was at a NASCAR race in Richmond VA back in April this year and he was telling me about this series, looks like they have all cars running virtually identical for close racing. Actually for once doesn't look nearly as dull as other road racing, not bad, still hardly any passing but very close racing.

CRO8TIA 07-01-2011 02:27 PM

Maybe they could have Marcos Ambrose have a run with his old mates.
And, how can running at 200 mph for 2 hours be classed as dumb .
We dont get Nascar over this way, wish we did, its more Super car Tourers , a lot of passing and rubbing.

I agree. Open wheel racing can be a bit stale for this reason.

I always thought having NASCAR stock cars race on a course like the Daytona/Indy Road Course would be awesome. I think it would provide a nice balance of technicality and overtaking excitement. Furthermore, it's still inside the oval, so that fans see the whole action.

canaryrx8 07-01-2011 03:26 PM

I was pretty stoked to hear about this, but it will be all for nothing if they don't finish the track, and all the greenie weenie's here in Austin are making it ridiculous for that to happen.
This place has clowns running the circus, I hope they don't ruin this opportunity for the handful of people who live here who aren't flaming hipster eco-terrorists.

Go "The GIS" !!!!

Got his first win in my home town (Hamilton NZ) this year and has gone on to another win in the last round .
Definitely some exciting racing at times in this series especially when they throw in a a variable like being able to use one set of soft tyres during a race . That ensures lots of overtaking and uncertainty about who will win .

ASH8 07-01-2011 05:28 PM

Sorry, but NASCAR is BORING!..compared to this....

I cant get excited in seeing a cars going around a circle/oval, and around and around and around.
Where is the skill?!

Used to think the same thing . But since Scott Dixon started doing well in Indycars I started following it and found the oval races more exciting than the circuit races .

eva02 07-01-2011 06:34 PM

cool, i hope more manufacturers get involved.

and nascar is whack yo!:boring:

YaXMaN 07-01-2011 09:30 PM

ASH8, Brettus, I can't believe it.

How cool is this? I live in Austin, and I'm actually going to get to go see Australian V8 Supercar racing. Here. In Texas. No shit.

I'll be sure to get grandstand tickets early, and pit/paddock passes. I don't have to travel, or pay for a hotel. Might as well do it up right and really enjoy the experience.

Brettus 07-01-2011 10:21 PM

/\ ASH - we have free accommodation !!!!

Silly luck. Nobody had any idea they were going to build an F1 track here. The place they're building it is to the east on the outskirts of the city. I'm having a tough time picturing what it's all going to look like after the change, since there's not much out there now.

monchie 07-02-2011 02:33 AM

Cool! Now, i could see it live, rather than watching it on the Speed Channel.

you and me both, there's practically zero infrastructure out there noiw, getting in and out on a 2 lane road with 1000's of people is going to be an adventure

You should definitely catch up with european touring serieses and fia gt races as well as the v8 superstars events :)
Lots of passing, overtaking, hitting etc. Definitely not the usual boring race, and they run on big circuits too.

Globetrahter 07-02-2011 10:19 AM

I'm in Austin, I cant wait!

Actually, I believe it's to the south. There were several posts about it in the F1 thread a while ago. I'll see if I can relocate it.

I know what you're saying, al. It's one of those strange local terms... if you zoom out, you'll see that Interstate 35 bisects Austin north to south. Even though you're absolutely correct that the location is, indeed, south of the center point of Austin, a lot of people locally would call the airport that's nearby, as well as Del Valle and Elroy, as east of Austin. That location in the link is correct. It's technically in a very small town called Elroy.

I know that's weird, but that Austin's claim... to keep it weird.

8upbad 07-04-2011 09:05 PM

omg, real racing in america...

You Aussies are slow.....

G8 GT For the WIN!

CRO8TIA 07-22-2011 04:37 AM

^^^^ Gotta love a sense of humour.

v3rlon 08-07-2011 08:19 PM

not 10 miles from my house...

All good for me. :)

And Elroy is like a tire change store with a Texaco and a Grill next door that sells exoctic game meats (Kangaroo burgers and Yak Pizza I swear I am not making it up!). I drive through on my way to work.

Not sure, but think the $400 million spent means its in Austin, even if the ground USED to be Elroy.

dynamho 10-11-2011 05:12 PM

Check out Darrell Waltrip (NASCAR) getting some Aussie love in a V8 Supercar hot lap.
Ahahaha!

Brettus 10-11-2011 06:26 PM

Classic commentary .

In other news - Seems the V8 race is having it's last year in Hamilton NZ next year :tear:

ASH8 10-11-2011 07:33 PM

Oh blimey.....

Pity the only resemblance to what you can actually purchase for transportation is the outer skin, lights and glass on the car , nothing else is from a road car Commodore or Falcon....around 15% is OEM.

But yeah, Bathurst has always been 'special'.

ASH8 02-11-2012 01:13 PM

Guess who is joining the V8 Supercars next year....

NEEEEESAN...yep....NISSAN

Anyone care to guess what V8 car they will run??

There is rumor that Chrysler or even KIA may join in....they want to limit it to 5 makes only.

Lots of platform changes and regulations come in for 2013 season...and the start of the USA venture.

Brettus 02-11-2012 02:05 PM

At freaking last !

ASH8 02-11-2012 02:11 PM

Arrrr you are back!..;)

So what car are Nissan going to use?

They don't have anything suitable do they ?

ASH8 02-11-2012 02:27 PM

The boss from Nissan Australia was on the Adelaide radio yesterday and gave a few things away,
Kelly brothers are going from GM to Nissan.

Regulations state it must be a 4 door sedan, so that rules out a V8 in an GTR (2 door) or 370Z.
He said it won't be a Maxima.

He said an announcement in a months time.

Callers said it could be an all new Nissan, I am thinking maybe a tie up with "Infiniti", talk is it is coming back to OZ...perhaps the G series re-badged as a Nissan ?

Could be an all new model, but next year?, I have not heard of any suitable all new 4 door Nissan?

xplod 02-11-2012 02:34 PM

V8 Juke? :fingersx: :icon16:

ASH8 02-11-2012 02:39 PM

Funny, Nissan Oz are trying to work out a business case to import next gen Juke in 2016.

Anyway for V8 Supercars it has to be a 4 door Sedan, not SUV.

YaXMaN 02-11-2012 04:58 PM

They're still coming along with the track, here... I don't think a date has been officially set for V8 Supercars, yet.

BobsRX8GT 02-11-2012 05:30 PM

I love the V8's. I live 10 km from the track here in Darwin. The sound they make is beautiful and the speeds they reach is pretty good to.

You guys are in for a treat.

ASH8 02-11-2012 10:30 PM

Track is going up here in Adelaide for the start of the 2012 season, the Clipsal 500 next month..

I heard they are going to try for Round 1 again next year (2013) so we will see the debut of the Nissan V8 Supercar...

alnielsen 02-11-2012 11:06 PM

Well at least it will be more than two models out on the track.

I got to see this live on tv. What makes it so funny is that he's a grown man who is no stranger to racing and his terrified commentary while riding.

Where is the skill?!

Two reasons for you to watch NASCAR:
Sears Point
Watkins Glen

No..I like your thinking mate...

I glad more manufacturers are coming into V8 Supercars, actually for me it was/is getting a little stale after 15 years of Ford and Holden (GM) only and ratings were/are fading.

Frankly F1 is f*cked..it is BORING...Boring and Boring, you rarely see REAL racing and hardly ever see good overtaking...they have become too clever for their own sake...too much tech...too much domineering by a few.

yea,

but you got to watch it.. F1 is like watching a possible train wreck. it could happen but likely it wont.. i am a big fan of mark weber!!!

the best part of F1 right now is qualifying.

i wish it would change, but it has not in the last 10 years. i miss the turbo days..

i put up a painting my mother did from the good old days..
