I was going to buy one the first year they came out. But things didn't work out financially. I test drove one a couple years later, and I didn't think much of it; too much torque steer (this was a front wheel drive model, not a Quattro).

Looks-wise, it seems a little stale now. Audi needs to update it.

i didnt like them when they were just a 1.8L i believe, but now that they moved up in power to like a 3 somthin Liter i have a bit more respect for them. But i do agree that they might want to redesign it a bit.

They are still 1.8 turbo (2 versions the turbo avail) w an optional v6. The base 1.8 turbo is only 185hp and costs about 33k. I think BMW is far safer and outperforms. Personally, I would get either a 330i or SLK.

I have never driven one so I cannot really speak about its driving dynamics. They are a too pricey, especially when you get the AWD 6 cyl, which you pretty much have to. I think they have some of the best interiors of any car in that price range though and I absolutely love the shifters and shift boots they have. It is a VERY small car and I think I would feel too cramped in something that only had two seats with absolutely no space behind them. The exterior design was very unique when it first came out but it has been copied quite a bit since then and needs a little freshening up. I think of them more as works of art than sportscars. I myself would rather have a 3 series or an AWD turbo car that is truly fast like an EVO, STI, etc.

I considered one. I think they're a blast to drive, but I found it to be a little slow. I'm not one for 1/4 mile times or anything like that, just fun to drive cars, so by me saying it felt a little slow... well, it just felt slow. It was fairly nimble, cornered flat, and I even got to scare the crap out of the sales dude on the test drive. If it had a bit more power for the money, or it was less money for the power I may have bought one.

I didn't get to drive the V6 model as it didn't exist at the time.

I'm looking forward to what it looks like once it's goes through its first major redesign though (whenever that may be). I'm kinda hoping it looks as fresh and clean as the original did when it first came out.

They look nice, better than the convo IMO.
Im not really a fan of the car though.
Its underperforming stock, and darn heavy for the size. IT feels pretty nimble though (hides the weight well), untill i get in my 7 or another sports car. The audi is more of a GT.
They can be made quick (cant anything?) for relatively cheap. And thier interior is nice and comfortable.

Car and Driver "The TT will be a classic 30 years from now" I'm too old to wait 30 years, so I got anRX8
They have a very heavy, clumsy feel.

Wow, some people tend to write things without thinking just because they own an rx8, or without having driven the car!

My bro owns an Audi S3. Ok, its not a TT but its pretty much the same, since I've driven both. I've done thousands of miles with the S3 and I can assure you: the 1.8L 225hp engine is not weak and the car is very agile, even faster than the 225hp TT due to better chassis. The way it grips on the tarmac is outstanding!

I think 'clumsy' is far from the truth. Would I buy one instead of the 8? Hell no! But if it wasn't discontinued, it would be the only car that would given me second thoughts.

In 2003, I was one (1) phone call away from buying a 225 Quattro TT. I test drove the car three (3) Times. There are advantages to the Quattro here in Canada but I have a 4X4 Truck for bad weather. Don't get me wrong-I liked the TT. The look is to die for, and the material quality is unmatched. But it doesn't have the same light feel as yhe RX8.

I test drove the TT and thought the 8 was a lot more fun to drive.
Plus, I saw one next to a VW Beetle at a traffic light, and it looked just like a squashed down version of the bug. IMO the 8 looks better than any car out there. (But I'm probably prejudiced )

Not too keen on the styling, VW Bug w/ power and Audi interior. Though that is the point... not so much for me.

Here's car that I feel that many people tend to forget about... the Lotus Elise that is soon coming to the US. About the same price as the v6 quattro, but undeniable handling and power, granted the 190 Toyota powered engine. Something to think about.

the TT doesn't do much for me. It is basically a rebadged beetle. I would much rather have an Audi S4 if I were to go the audi route.

That is, and always gonna be, my dream car!! Though I've never driven one, the Elise must be one of the world's best cars. Seriously!
Have you ever seen one on the street? Even with the weak 120hp Rover engine it moves with such grace and ease! Changing lanes so fast, you wouldn't believe in your eyes! I think Lotus enginners are not humans!
Too bad it has to be your 2nd or 3rd car to live with

P.S. I keep saying to myself "drive one before you die" and I'm sure I will!!

... going back to Audi though... I'll admit that the TT is growing on me... slowly.

Also, I'll have to agree with rx-cars_rock on that one. If you wanted to get the convertible. Then again I'm not sure that the S4 'vert can even be put in the same range because of the vast price difference. Would be nice though...hmmm

All you ever wanted to know about TT's and more

I am planning the purchase of a TT 3.2 V6 later this year because I don't want a strait forward manual or a power sapping automatic - it's the best of both worlds. I've always loved the design of the TT, and the AWD. As for the 3 TT coupe models - here is the break down (note I live and breath TT's). The entry level model is a 1.8 T which is 180 hp, front wheel drive and only available with a 6-sp triptronic automatic (from what I heard it's not painfully slow, but not fast either - although owners in the TT community will look down on you for going with a TT 180 with automatic). The next model up is the TT 225, only available with a 6-sp manual and AWD - supposedly this model feels sometimes sluggish but once the turbo kicks in - whoosh. The next model up is the TT 3.2, which has that new 6-sp DSG tranny (takes .04 sec to change a gear) has 2 automatic modes and 2 manual modes, also only available in AWD. The TT 225 and TT 3.2 performance numbers are very close, the 3.2 being a little faster. As for modding - no one out there is touching the TT 180 with the automatic tranny - so no mods are available for it, if you go for an older model which had a 5-sp manual - there are lots of mods available that can turn it into a front drive tire eating 300 hp monster. The TT 225 is also very modable can be brought over the 300 mark. The TT 3.2 right now is not very modable because of it's new DSG tranny - so it doesn't look good as far as modding goes. I've been to a few Audi dealerships, my favorite being in midtown Manhattan - The Park Ave Audi Showroom. The car for me feels like it fits like a glove, yet the car is small and compact. I've heard it'll seat people who are like 6'4" comfortably, and sitting behind the wheel of it being 5'5" - it felt comfortable for me.
If you plan on going for a used TT - beware of the '00 and '01 models because both years had their share of problems, which were mostly worked out by the '02 model year. Any TT 180 '00 - '02 model years were only available with a 5-sp manual - '03 and up only have an automatic. Audi has a 4 year, 50,000 mile warranty, which they during that time cover all maintenance for free on the car - even changing the windshield wipers. The back seats on the TT are extremely small and anyone taller than a circus midget will feel extremely cramped back there. With the rear seats folded down, you have 24.2 cu feet of cargo space. With the proper snow tires - an AWD TT is very capable in the snow, but if you have summer tires - it'll be awful in the snow. All TT's get somewhere between 22-29 mpg - both city and highway. There are TT communities out there - the biggest being on Audiworld.com - there are 2 major yearly TT meet ups, and TT owners are extremely diehard fans. the 1.8L have a lot of mods available for them, but not many for the 3.2 yet. Basically a TT sacrifices some performance for style and luxury - it might not outperform many sports cars out there in strait line stints - but curvy roads is where a TT really shines. Good luck with you decision.

Any other questions - you could email me MikeOpenGL@msn.com

I hope that answered your question.

- Mike

I've driven a couple, and while it's not a bad little car it's definitely way overpriced for what is essentially a rebadged Golf/Beetle. In fact, if you compare the FWD base model TT to the Beetle Turbo S, the Beetle has the same 180hp engine, same FWD platform and is actually better equipped for about $10k less!

GodWhomIsMike nice writeup. When they first came out the body style was a breath of fresh air, concur that it is now dated. From my experience in the cockpit of the coupe, my old Cooper S felt way more spacious, I just felt cramped in the Audi, very small. Also have to side with another earlier vote, the route is the S4, could be the sleeper giant killer of our generation. Most people have no idea what your packin' in that car!
