Advice on buyin a BEATER!

Yes that's right. If I sell the 8 sometime soon, I will need a beater to drive around so I can save a little bit before buying my next ride. I need to save enough so my payments will be in the mid 300's. I figure it will take about a year or so with some of the cars I'm lookin at. But I don't know much about cheap shitty beater cars. My goal is to buy something for no more than $3K, driving it for a year, and then selling it again for close to $3K so I don't lose too much. I also want to make sure I get something that won't break down on me, so I'm not wasting money. What are some ways to go about shopping for beaters? I have never had to before, and it seems like doing research on this is just as important as doing research on new cars. Should I be looking for old hondas I guess?
