AAA Study Finds Drastic Differences In Gasoline Quality

So basically, spend the extra 2 bucks for high quality gas. Your engine will thank you. I'm not sure which fuels are stamped "Top Tier" but it seems important to figure out!

In Canada I'm pretty sure Shell, Esso, And Petro Canada are considered top tier.

I do Petro Canada 94. always.

Recently a gas station near my parents place in northeastern CT, got a batch of gasoline that was so bad it clogged the filters/fuel pumps in some cars that got gas there afterwards.

The station had to pay to fix the fuel systems for those vehicles.

Shell is my main source, because it has a rep for being the cleanest.

Next is Exxon/Mobil, because they're also Top Tier and I had some advice in their favor from someone whose opinion I respect.

On rare occasions, when I can't wait and there's nothing else around, I use Sunoco.

Can't remember the last time I got any fuel from any other station.

Apparently Sunoco is not certified:

Well I did say it's my last resort. It's like 5% of the fuel I buy.

This reminds me, though: I've had a few rotary folks give me crap for insisting on Top Tier. They said high-detergent fuel washes oil off the rotor chamber walls and increases wear. Maybe my Google-fu is weak, but I couldn't find any mention of that anywhere else. Anyone heard something similar?

Yes IamFodi it is a Catch-22. High detergent gas can wash the oil away that is lubricating your engine while helping with less carbon deposits. The AAA tests were NOT with a rotary engine, with its unique internal lubrication needs. It probably is still a good idea to use the best quality gas you can. Back in my amateur RX7 racing days we used top tier gas (lots of Shell , Exxon and Sunoco's Cam 2) , but also used the max premix ratio to protect our engine's internals for the sustained high rpms we were running.

Can you point me to a source where I can read more about the wear thing? Literally everything else I have read about fuel in an internal combustion engine is consistent with the idea that quality and deposit control are the two most important things (in that order), period. And I have to imagine that would be especially important for a dirty engine like the Renesis...
