2020 C8 Corvette

Alright so I know I cannot be the only one that thinks this is the ultimate performance per dollar vehicle to hit he road in a long time. If I was in a better situation (stupid student loans and recently married) I would preorder one these

Beautiful car. I feel like the Corvette has always been the ultimate performance per dollar vehicle, however.

I always felt the same, but now being a mid engine bumped it up big time. I can't wait to see the zl1. Its going to approach hypercar territory I bet.

I'm in. I don't even mind the silly HVAC control barrier between the driver and passenger seats.

Just need $60k.

Rear could have looked a bit better, and there is no manual trans option this time around.

Otherwise, looks very promising. It will take some time for people to get used to the proportions.

I will probably stick with a C7 in the future, though, because of the price and I like driving a stick shift.

And if you want performance per dollar, get a used C5 or C6. Problem solved.

I've always appreciated the corvette for being the best bang for buck performance car out there, but I've never been interested in owning one. I feel like they're the archetype for "mid life crisis" and typically driven by senior citizens. However, this one has absolutely won me over. Maybe I'm getting old lol

“Simplify, then add lightness.”

“Adding power makes you faster on the straights; subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere.”— Colin Chapman

Seein’ as how I’m a huge proponent of that sports car engineering philosophy, I suspect the new Corvette will be of little interest to me. Of course, I could be wrong; how much will it weigh, exactly?

It's supposedly around 3300 pounds.

And as for the Chapman philosophy... It applies more to some places than others. If you are an Autocrosser, this is true, since there are few to no straight lines and big power isn't the most useful. Yes, a Miata can beat a Corvette there.

On a track? Power absolutely freakin' matters in a straight line, which a track will have. That's why even Lotus themself have the S trim for their cars - a Corolla engine only gets you so far. People put a turbo or even an LS engine in a Miata for the same reason. At some point, you need more power to be competitive. Power to weight ratio will be a bigger factor here, for sure.

Corvette was never really that big on being lightweight, though that is a consideration (aluminum block, leaf spring, etc.). There is only so much weight reduction you can do with a US$50k to 60k price tag. And it was never designed to compete against the likes of Miata or S2000.

Just means you are never really in the market for a car like Corvette. A Miata is what you are after.

3,300 lbs? That’s lighter than I would’ve guessed. But yeah, a Miata is what I’d be after. Hey, I’ve owned three of ‘em.

How heavy do you think the 'vette is? Not every American performance car is a Mustang, you know.

C6 weighed about 3150~3400 lbs, and C7 weighed about 3350~3550 lbs. C8 will probably be around C7 level.

Still, imagine how amazing it would be if it were in a 2000 lb chassis.

Honestly, if a 400+ HP V8 can be fit into an ND Miata without adding huge amounts of weight, why couldn't GM have done it? Even a fully dressed RF GT is under 2500. Add another two hundred-ish pounds for 4 more cylinders and it's still 2700 lbs.

And even at 3500, I think the C8 is going to be awesome.

They probably could have done it. But then where would all of the 50-60 year olds put their golf clubs??? Plus they probably designed the chassis to be able to add much more cooling capacity for the bigger horsepower models we know are coming.

That said, I agree with you completely, though it would have been nice if they could have figured out a way to squeeze a third pedal into it,

I hate that everyone is going away from manual transmissions. I don't care how slow they are in a straight line, the analog feeling of a sports car is what its all about.

In the next few years I'm going to be looking for a good deal on a 2019 C7 Zo6 with manual trans. I would assume in 20 years that they will be highly collectible as the last corvette with 3 pedals

I'd rather have this.
Supercharged 4 cylinder, 220 hp.
Less than 2000 lbs.
1 of 25 Saffron Yellow California Edition

Just be aware that it's loud AF on a highway(noise insulation is weight), probably no A/C, power windows are optional, bare minimum interior.

I care about comfort, but if you don't, go for it.

And if you don't track or autocross with it, I won't ever stop bothering you about it. Never.

Probably won't meet the safety regulations, and people paying that kinda money usually want comfort as well.

Your average North American also prefer bigger cars.

We get it, it's faster, it's more fuel efficient, etc.

I just like driving a manual, that's all there is to it.

Welp, let's hope they figure it out this time around, because GM didn't quite figure it out on the C7 Z06 with people overheating them on tracks.

Well, since I can't afford either one, it's a moo point.

Elise is always gonna be expensive, especially if it's an Elise S(which the one you posted seems to be).

A Corvette will depend on how far back you are willing to go. A C5 honestly isn't that bad but the interior can feel cheap. I have seen some in my area going for CAN$15k so that's US$10k ish, and it's a good deal given the LS1 pumps out a healthy ~350 BHP. C4 is the cheapest Corvette you can buy now, not sure if you wanna go that far back.

I've never really cared about owning a corvette, but this new generation is a game changer in the automotive landscape. Rear mid engined cars with at least 8 cylinders is usually exotic territory. To have that for 60K is nuts.

Also consider this is the base car. I've heard rumors of overhead cam and turbocharging for the z06 equivalent for this generation.

Now I suppose the question is, does it perform and how well is it built?

Well, the build quality is gonna be very... American. You get what you pay for. I was talking to a C7 Grand Sport owner today and he told me it can be a little rough here and there, nothing too bad, though.

His C7 is also an 8AT, which he says can have overheating problems towards the end of a track day. I imagine the new DCT wouldn't have this issue.

Also, the C7 Z06 LT4 engine is known to overheat on the track as well, so let's hope they take care of that.

I didn't know that Corvettes had plastic fenders, and in a very unfortunate way for the owner - he took a corner way too hard and bumped into a monster tire on the track. He showed me the pieces of the cracked fender and bumper and I was surprised to see that the fender is plastic. Weight reduction or cost saving? IDK

Had a c6 zo6. It was too much for most people. It was light, it was very powerful and wasn’t expensive( bought used).
It scared the hell out of me.
you could break the rear end loose at 100 mph in 4th gear pretty easily.
Although power can be a lot of fun, it sometimes can be a double edged sword.

I am very excited to see it, its strikes quite a good balance for the "road warriors" that never go to a track. Ample storage (My favorite is the fact you can fit the removable top in the rear unlike A LOT of cars) and the idea of a great stereo system. How old do I sound now? XD

Weight is going to continue to go up. Like mentioned before some for cooling I am sure, but also safety gets more and more strict each year. That = weight. So comparing a tiny outdated 2000lb miata to this imo is irreverent.

I would like to add did anyone see it has a dry sump? I think that is freaking awesome, multiple reasons that we all know but thats usually a tasking and somewhat expensive addition to any vehicle. Just goes to show they cared about the balance of the car and oil starvation.
