Fingers crossed that they take come at least one win this season.

Short race at Detroit. Hopefully they can pull some speed and qualify well.

Interesting news coming from IMSA this morning on the status of the DPi 2.0 cars set to debut in 2020-2021.
Obviously hybrid tech is where the automotive world is headed so its nice to see it being integrated without it feeling like they're going all in on hybrid systems like the FIA cars currently are.

https://sportscar365.com/imsa/iwsc/i...n-for-dpi-2-0/

It'll be cool to see the manufacturers getting even more leeway when it comes to brand design cues. I think that'll set IMSA apart but man that's gotta be a challenge to then balance out all the aero packages.

Happy for Mazda, I go way back to being involved with the first Mazdas in IMSA in the 70's. With some luck they should get that win this season. The drivers did a super job in my opinion. The Mazda brand will get noticed again in motorsports and that is what matters. Cheers to all.

Interesting op-ed piece by the Editor in Chief over at sportscar365.com talking about what can be done with the WEC (LeMans) and IMSA going forward. (spoiler alert: combine them!)

Could DPi Be the WEC’s Lifeline?

With less than 16 months before the start of the 2020-21 FIA World Endurance Championship season, regulations for the series’ top class have yet to be finalized.

Multiple deadlines to define the next-generation ruleset, first revealed at last year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans under the ‘Hypercar’ moniker, have come and gone, and even last-ditch efforts to allow production-based hypercars into the top class have not gained traction among manufacturers.

Quite frankly, the FIA and ACO appear to be in a state of crisis.

Officials from both organizations declined to comment on the situation during last weekend’s Six Hours of Spa, where Toyota Gazoo Racing unsurprisingly clinched the LMP1 teams’ world championship, a title introduced for the 2018-19 ‘Super Season’ due to the lack of manufacturers present in the top class.

With the Japanese manufacturer running away with race wins, despite even the biggest concessions made to the non-hybrid privateers, and Toyota declaring intentions of retiring its TS050 Hybrid following the 2019-20 season, the WEC needs new regulations, and they need to define them now.

Despite boasting a somewhat healthy grid of non-hybrids, with entries from SMP Racing, Rebellion Racing, DragonSpeed and ByKolles, the world championship cannot survive on privateers alone, especially with a looming reduced factory presence in GTE-Pro.

A media roundtable at Sebring, site of the WEC’s return to the Florida airfield circuit in March, showcased the current lack-of-direction from championship organizers, with a proposal revealed to balance prototype hypercars, production-based hypercars, grandfathered LMP1 non-hybrids and potentially others, all into a single class.

Yet, the literal free-for-all has still not delivered a firm commitment from a single OEM, with Toyota even lashing out on the “ridiculous” deadlines they’d face in order to build a car in time for the 2020-21 season, given the months of delays from the rules-makers.

FIA WEC CEO Gerard Neveu assured the media in March they’d have a “Plan B” in place should its latest concept not generate sufficient commitments from manufacturers.

In the months since, many have wondered what “Plan B” could exactly be.

It’s known that a collation of GTE manufacturers have pushed forward the concept of GTE-Plus again, which would put the production-based cars, with significant power and aero adjustments, as the top class.

While a short-term fix, such a move would arguably be a detriment to the sport as a whole, not only in the instant elimination of its most competitive platform, but also leaving a significant gap in the European Le Mans Series and ACO-blessed IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Pundits and industry insiders have been stating the obvious for months, in that the global adoption of IMSA’s DPi platform would be the most sustainable route for manufacturers, privateer teams and for sports car racing worldwide.

And with all other options exhausted, it appears to be the only remaining choice that the FIA and ACO have.

Having shown previous distaste towards IMSA’s successful LMP2-based platform, recent comments by Neveu and ACO sporting director Vincent Beaumesnil have indicated they may have changed their tune.

Developments in recent weeks seem to point towards this very direction, with Neveu leaving the door open to DPi for the future, and a meeting reportedly having taken place between the ACO and IMSA on this subject late last month.

Additionally, ACO technical delegate Thierry Bouvet was present during last weekend’s DPi 2.0 Steering Committee meeting at Mid-Ohio, with Bouvet making the trans-Atlantic trip in the middle of the WEC’s penultimate round of the season at Spa.

With a May 1 deadline for at least one manufacturer to commit to its Hypercar plan having come and gone, “Plan B” may very well already be in motion.

How the French organizers would integrate DPi, amid the early stages of planning for IMSA’s so called DPi 2.0, which is slated to debut in Daytona 2022, is unclear. But a season or two of LMP1 non-hybrids and DPis racing together via Balance of Performance would surely produce better results than today’s on-track product in LMP1.

Privateer teams like Rebellion and SMP could continue with their existing machinery for an additional two or three seasons, while manufacturers like Toyota would affordably be able to outfit an LMP2 chassis with its own engine and styling cues as an interim project prior to the arrival of DPi 2.0.

It would also open the door for existing DPi manufacturers such as Cadillac, Acura and Mazda to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, or even full WEC seasons, instantly adding new content to the top class.

Judging by the early interest of DPi 2.0, where nine manufacturers were represented in last week’s working group, the class would see even more OEM involvement once the new-generation ruleset debuts.

A representative from one manufacturer that’s not currently in DPi but involved in DPi 2.0 discussions told Sportscar365 they would gain instant approval from their board to enter should the platform be eligible in both IMSA and the WEC.

With IMSA President Scott Atherton remaining open to the prospects of a global platform, while moving ahead with its own well-executed roadmap for DPi 2.0, it’s never been a better time for the two powers of endurance racing to align and produce a single global platform.

The ACO will need to swallow a bit of its pride, but for the greater good of the sport, it needs to be done, and it has to happen now.

I don't actually follow the WEC but have seen that the top class is no longer competitive at all with Audi leaving the series a while ago and Toyota basically just taking every win without any real competitions.
I obviously (like many of us here) am a fan of the DPi class and as they move forward with DPi 2.0 in a few years, why not expand it globally? How awesome would it be to see these cars running at LeMans!

I wonder how much Mazda is willing to commit for this series if it does go that route. I would assume the available finances of Mazda VS the other DPi manufacturers are already a David VS Goliath situations. The R&D and other team fundings will only substantially increase if the class moves upward and international.

True but I think that's already why Mazda chose IMSA over FIA or WEC. Their costs are absolutely ridiculous, even Audi bowed out.
IMSA seems to be handling that part of the series extremely well by limiting tech they essentially control costs in order to allow smaller manufacturers to be able to compete with teams that have much larger R&D budgets.

Plus, in talking to John Doonan at Long Beach, it's no secret how bad Mazda wants to get competitive and take another shot at LeMans. If IMSA goes global, we might see the 55 return to that race

Hopefully their develope of an in-house straight-six cylinder engine (see my other thread in this section) trickles into their next generation of race cars. Perhaps they'll become even more competitive with power and reliability against the other manufacturers.

DPi qualifying starts at about 30:00

Mazda qualified 3rd and 7th.

They missed the first practice because of engine issues, one of the announcers during qualifying relayed from Larry Holt that it was a faulty failsafe sensor.

Missed the race today, but I see the results were quite poor.

I followed up on Bomarito with Mazdamotorsports Instagram and he mentioned something about getting contact from another car while he was running 2nd?

I watched half the race, and they were both running quite well. 77 was in the lead just after a Yellow flag session, and 55 was in third or fourth at the time.
Unfortunately, I had company come over, and the next time I got to take a look, 55 was out, and 77 was in the pits from contact with another car, and dead last.

I just shut the computer off at that point, and went back to my guest.

BC.

that's almost exactly what I did last night. Got back into town late and started watching the race (already knowing the results) and when I turned it off was right after the 77 was leading because they didn't pit with the rest of the field.
55 was running strong and did a driver change so I kept waiting for it to go to **** any minute but I got tired and turned the TV off.

j_tso: wow, looks like the 55 definitely had some help getting into that barrier.

alright, time to shake off the disappointment from Mid-Ohio and get ready for Six Hours at the Glenn!
Call me crazy but I still think Mazda has a chance to win a race or two but this streak of bad luck needs to freaking end already.

Good news is Balance of Performance adjustments are out and this could help Mazda.

The pair of Team Penske Acura ARX-05s have been hit with an increase in minimum weight ahead of next weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.
Confirmed in the latest Balance of Performance issued by IMSA, the Mid-Ohio and Detroit-winning DPi car will be 15 kg heavier for the sixth round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.

It brings the Acura DPi’s weight up to 935 kg, on par with the Nissan DPi, which remains unchanged other than the allowance of a new front wheel arch wicker aero option.

Additionally, the Acura DPi has been handed a 1-liter reduction in fuel capacity.
No other BoP changes have been made the class.
Looking at the BoP report IMSA issued, here is where the cars now stand as far as weight:
  • Mazda - 910 kg
  • Acura - 935 kg
  • Nissan - 935 kg
  • Cadillac - 960 kg

agreed, they've gotta get that monkey off their back and then focus on running their races.
The Team Joest contract is actually up at the end of the season so there's always that as well...

I think Joest may bolt if they aren't more successful.

Joest doesn't have a whole lot of options though. That's kind of how Mazda was able to land their services.
I really think Joest & Mazda is a good pairing, they're just not used to having such a small budget and limited resources to work with. I keep thinking that damn 4 cylinder isn't helping things either.

Really wish the inline 6 Mazda is developing would be ready for deployment.

It's Race Weekend and Mazda is leading the way already.

Tincknell Quickest in Opening Practice at The Glen

A late flyer by Harry Tincknell has put Team Joest atop the time sheets in the opening practice session for Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.

The Englishman reeled off a 1:30.690 lap in the No. 55 Mazda RT24-P in the closing seconds of the session, which was brought to an early end for GT Daytona class Bronze/Silver-rated drivers due to an accident and fire for an Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo.

Tincknell ended up 0.112 seconds faster than the No. 7 Team Penske Acura ARX-05 of Helio Castroneves, followed by Dane Cameron in the sister No. 6 Acura DPi in third.
The second and final practice of the day is set for 3:05 p.m. ET.

Yikes, Acura found some more speed in the 2nd practice.

Cameron, Acura Team Penske Quickest on Friday at The Glen

Dane Cameron ended Friday on the top of the time sheets at Watkins Glen, in the opening day of track action for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen.

The Acura Team Penske driver unofficially shattered the qualifying track record by more than two seconds, laying down a 1:30.014 in his No. 6 Acura ARX-05.

Cameron’s time was 0.828 seconds quicker than the No. 55 Team Joest Mazda RT24-P of Jonathan Bomarito, who made a late improvement to second.

77 qualified 1st with a lap record.

55 in 4th.

Good news, but it's still a 6 hour race.

Damn it NBC is this really only available live on the NBC sports app? That's lame.
Casting it to my TV and in the 1st minute Corvette and Mercedes have already totalled their cars.

we've got some drama already!
1st minute into the race and a big crash takes out a Corvette and a Mercedes. Been a rough few weeks for Ben Keating who won LeMans only to have the win taken away the next day when tech inspection found a fueling violation and now he crashes out on the first lap of Watkins Glen.

Mazda's #77 running strong!

This was has my full attention. Both cars are running strong and Oliver is just blitzing through traffic in the #77. Fingers crossed again for a win.

edit: how about that pass by Tincknell in the #55 past Ricky Taylor in the #7 Acura in traffic?!

absolutely has my attention.
BALLSY pass and smart move by Taylor not to squeeze Tinknell in that situation because that could have gone bad for both cars.
Mazda absolutely has the pace.
now we just have to execute.
for another 5 and a half hours.

c'mon Mazda!
