LOS ANGELES -- The redesigned 2014 Mazda3 has received an EPA rating of 29 mpg city/41 highway.
The rating, announced today by Mazda, covers the 2014 Mazda3 sedan with a manual transmission and a 155-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Adding an automatic transmission boosts the Mazda3's city rating by 1 mpg, while highway fuel economy is unchanged.
The Mazda3's EPA rating exceeds the entry-level models of compact segment leaders such as the Honda Civic, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze, Kia Forte, Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla, according to the EPA's fuel economy comparison Web site, fueleconomy.gov.

Mazda is taking a huge risk with these prices. The Focus ST is only 28 grand. How much will the Mazdaspeed 3 cost, 30 grand? maybe that's why they're thinking of going the non-turbo route much like the Honda Civic SI to help keep cost down. They'll lighten the car a little, give it a little more na horsepower and make it about the handling. The question is will it be enough? Sure the critics will love it, they loved the 8 and praised it whenever they could. Didn't help the 8 sell though.
The prices are justified as they are stuffing technology into the top trim 3's that were ONLY available on premium luxury cars 2-3 years ago. Though it is obviously not certain whether or not consumers that are shopping for a compact car will have the need for such features.
With that said, the tops sellers will obviously be the i Sport and i Touring. Not often does one spot an s GT gen1 and 2 on the streets.

Do we know what that looks like? From google, I found a "crystal blue" that was previously used on the 2002 MX-5. Not a fan of this at all. Perhaps deep crystal blue is something different? Wish they would bring back the more manly winning blue or aurora blue from the RX-8. Those were both great shades of blue. Even the sky blue and stormy blue used on the CX-5 would be good to use on the new 3. I'm also real curious what the new "titanium flash" color looks like. I just wish mazda would offer a couple of colors that really pop besides red.
