“Electrorheology Leads to Efficient Combustion” - AKA better gas mileage

http://http://www.temple.edu/newsroo...fueldevice.htm

A Temple U professor designed a "simple" device which does the following:

"With the use of a power supply from the vehicle’s battery, the device creates an electric field that thins fuel, or reduces its viscosity, so that smaller droplets are injected into the engine. That leads to more efficient and cleaner combustion than a standard fuel injector"

In 6 months of testing they claim it boosted highway mileage of a diesel mercedes by 20%, 12-15% city increase. It was designed for "all types of internal combustion engines".

This is over my head in terms of its engineering, but I thought it was interesting.

I read this previously. It sounds like the old gimmick of putting magnets on the fuel line.

Saying it "thins fuel" is a bit misleading. What exactly does that mean? I don't believe it is running leaner. However you can atomize fuel better. This is the advantage (one of them) of fuel injection over carbs. However it also mentions a diesel Mercedes and diesel fuel is thicker than gasoline. It has a much higher viscosity. It is an oil by definition. By lowering the diesel fuel viscosity it may make it possible for it to mix better. The easiest way to make diesel fuel or any other oil thinner is to make it hotter. You can definitely use electrical current to make something hotter.

I'm not going to cry bs until I have more information as to what was done.

Yeah all I've read about it is this one article, and it definitely doesn't give much information. When I get some extra time I might search for a bit more info. I thought some people on here might know more as well.
