$5 gas by 2012?

http://money.cnn.com/2010/12/27/mark...ties/index.htm

Scary stuff.

York 01-02-2011 10:54 AM

The world ends in 2012 anyway. Might as well burn all our savings on gas.

bse50 01-02-2011 12:15 PM

around 1.5€\litre right now.

77mjd 01-02-2011 12:18 PM

If this were to come to fruition, the economic consequences will be disasterous...it will make late '08 -'09 look like a walk in the park. Not that this would even be important anymore, but you can pretty much kiss all sports cars goodbye too.

York 01-02-2011 12:18 PM

and the google calculator saaaaaaaaaaays....
1.5 (Euros per liter) = 7.59334677 U.S. dollars per US gallon

That really blows dude..

Cole33 01-02-2011 12:19 PM

Wow. I am glad I don't live in Europe!

Much of that is taxes that are added on. Also, the way Europe refines oil creates a higher percentage of diesel to gasoline than in North America.

York 01-02-2011 12:38 PM

Yeah, I know that in Sweden we only had 95 and 98 octane.

That's true. Our taxation is heavier but we are victims of your democracy import policies as well  No offense intended, of course :)

I don't know what you mean or where your going with that, but if it is political, we better not go there.

bse50 01-02-2011 01:00 PM

Nope, it's absolutely not political. I think that it is, funny names aside, an economical fact.
One of the differences in gas prices is that you can actually count on a partial national production plus better taxation, we can't and must import energy from pretty much all over the world (see Russia etc).
The effects of war on gas prices and the economy are well documented, the above are the reasons why we are affected in a heavier way than you :)

alnielsen 01-02-2011 01:13 PM

The amount of exploration and oil produced here are affected by politics. Sometimes I wonder if they are holding back, waiting for the other parts of the world to run out.

York 01-02-2011 01:14 PM

Could always try to drill in the gulf again. It worked out pretty well last time :ugh2:

That would be fun, the world invading the usa vs the usual opposite :)

York 01-02-2011 01:30 PM

He's talking shit about America! He's obviously a turban wearing terrorist!

bse50 01-02-2011 01:37 PM

Rofl!
I don't think that my position is relevant but it is good to note what other people think about a subject.
You can't really be open minded if your sources come all from the same place, right? Listening to them all and picking the one you like the most is the way to go! Otherwise it's just indoctrination =)
From an economy point of view this is also rather interesting since you are the ones trying to rule the economy (and failing at that given the changed world assets), we are the ones ruled by both you and the far east!

paulmasoner 01-02-2011 02:25 PM

G strikes a particular note with me with a couple of his comments regarding opinions of others(outside of the US). It truly is interesting to be mixed in various cultures living overseas for many years. The rest of the world views America in a very different light than America views itself. Oddly it may be(?), I tend to see America the way foreigners do moreso than the way Americans do.

I won't expound further as it would require, at some, level political talk. And I have no desire to go there, nor get mod-slapped for it.

User24 01-02-2011 05:03 PM

The rest of the world thinks Americans are Bruce Willis, The Hills, Jersey Shore, etc. etc.

Octane is computed differently in Europe than it is in the US.
We use an average of research octane and motor octane (AKI).
Europe just uses the research number, which is usually 5 points higher than the R+M/2 method.

That's kinda why I chuckle when a European customer gloats and asks for a "special" tune for their "superior" gasoline.

York 01-02-2011 05:43 PM

I sure did not know that. I also thought that it was just more strict for emissions laws or whatever. I learned something new today, thanks.

Cole33 01-02-2011 06:00 PM

^^ More high knowledge from MM. He knows his stuff.

The rating stuff is real but our overall fuel quality is also higher and we don't get as much ethanol hype etc as you do in some states there :)
Since the base refined oil is pretty much the same maybe it's just a matter of additives. What do you think?

Overall fuel quality is about the same, though the European blends have less ethanol because it is more expensive in Europe than gasoline.

nycgps 01-02-2011 06:46 PM

Ethanol FTMFW !!!!! ... SIKE !

Americans (at least tree huggers & some politicians & general populations) *think* that Ethanol is cleaner.

hoho~ I really wish the gas hits 5 bucks a gallon so I can at least stop seeing god damn woman driving those oversized Yukon XL alone.

olddragger 01-02-2011 07:42 PM

if it is too high--then stop using it.
The only thing a company reacts too is the bottom line.
I grew up "poor" by these days standards. No running water, no phone, no central heat, no a/c (and I live in the south)....if you had too you would be surprised what you could do without.
