What were your previous rides?

Juz a drift from the usual topics...out of curiousity, what were your previous
rides? How does it fare against the 8? Let me start the ball rolling...

1) hyundai elantra---nice n comfy but its korean 1.6l...how gd do u want it to be?

2)Renault trafic---yes,its a van...n i'm still driving it now as my day car...big,nice n
comfy wif plenty of torque...great handling as well consider the
height n CG but how to compare to the 8?

3)mitsubishi Fto---great ride, powerful engine, handling in no way significantly
inferior to the 8...but comes in only auto n is an ff car...easily
the 2nd best car i've ever driven...

4)Nissan sunny---the 1st 1.6l car i've ever driven that made feel as though i was
driving a rotary...i could have swore the fuel needle goes down
abit everytime i stepped on the accelerator...but nice car
nontheless

5) nissan S15---gd car wif tons of torque...but somehow i juz feel the turbine
upsets the balance of the car during cornering?but perhaps it coz
i'm not that gd a driver?but anyway, i could never stand the turbo
lag in the car...

6)VW beetle---no...i'm not gay...i juz happen to be a guy wif fine taste...
juz kidding, though i do have pple asking me if i'm gay but not
becoz of the car...its a nice ride but the body roll during corner
sorts of kills the fun plus the car seems to be understeering n the
1.6l na engine literary ran out of breath everytime u put the pedal
to the metal...

7)mazda rx8---best car i've driven...handles well,accelerates well n corners well...
but then not without its flaw...spring n dampening could be
improved...n like wat keiichi tsuchiya says, its a sport car without
power...

hope to c some inputs from u guys...thanks...

oh this is fun.

1991
mitsubishi colt super shift. 1980 model 1.2 ltr, black hatchback.
my veri first car out if army. even though 10 years old but serve me
well in my first sales job. cheap parts and maintainence

1993
suzuki swift gti
good low torque. good for traffic light sprints. very unstable above 140km/hr.
manual steering, manual winding of windows.

1995
honda accord 1.6 16v-co. car
this car back then was talk of the town. super comfy n quiet but no power and fragile engine n transmission. I floor the car from KL to Sin, come back, radiator and tranny overhaul, cost my co. 6K in repairs and the stupid mechanics can leave their pliers in the engine.

1996
Renault 19-16v convertable
Damn chio car, done up nicely by previous owner with full body kit, lowered suspension and full Remus stainless steel header/exhaust system. It was so damn loud, I did something to reduce the db. Maintaince and repair was a damn killer. I drove it for 6 months only. cannot tahan the repairs and frigging insurance
at 4K

1997
Nissan bluebird sss-x-co. car
apart from the name, this is a damn good car. good power even for a 1.8ltr auto.
same engine as a 200sx w/o the turbo. it also had an advance suspension, many electronic gimmicks and no A pillar. seat belt anchor from the roof.
Subaru legacy GL-personal car
spacious, noisy hollow sounding boxer engine, superb and comfortable suspension that sticks to the road even over large humps.
corner quite a bit of roll. lose steam at about 160km/hr

1999
Mazda astina 10 year old car
i took a 6 month break from working. so had to be economical.
real cool car, flip up headlights, digital meters but very light and doors very thin.

1999
Rover 620SLI
This is 1 of my favourite cars! super comfy, spacious, quite, honda accord engine/tranny, Rover suspension and well built.
Genuine walnut burl all round and 4 doors.
I whack 200km on NS highway with 3 colleagues snoring away.
Then 1 day in 2002, the government send me a letter and
give me additional 8K because previous agent intra motors under declare OMV.
Mai tu liao-SCRAP!

2003-Opel Asta convertible-1.6l manual
I was invited to a soft launch for the Opel Astra convertible by my sales agent friend in Eurokars. He knew I was a sucker for convertibles. Pass me the remote.
The soft top can open and close with the remote. I play until the motor jam.
Then he told me Irin Gan oso book the same car in black, maybe when she collect
hers, you can collect yours at the same time. The rest was history.
Chick magnet, Very sturdy like SAAB, lack of power, shifter very precise, only
bare essentials like an Audi. The insurance and depreciation was a killer.

2005-RX8 Auto
Got an auto becoz wifey going for auto licence.
This car is quirky. Opening the doors is a skill.
Passengers in my ride always have the doors slamming back at them.
The air con could be better built in view of the rotary heat.
Easily oversteers in wet conditions and becoz of RWD.
Other then these quirks, this car is great.

My next car- Either Evo X or IS250

My first car was a late 80s diseal GMC Suburban. It got 25+ MPG, really.

I stepped down a lot in college to a Toyota Terrcel 4wd hatch back, but I have to say it also got great milage and ran it 350,000 miles before replacing the engine b/c the oil pan gasket had hemorraged on a long highway drive without me noticing.

Got an Izuzu Trooper after that and ran it until the transmission gave out.

Replaced it with a Land Rover Discovery SLE... totally sweet car, but started having minor hiccups in not drivetrain systems (electrics and such) near the end of warrenty.

I traded it in on a new Disco... which I then traded in on my Shinka with the false hope of better milage. Oh well, I love the car anyway. (I guess it is better than the 11 mpg the Rover got)

1966--Raleigh pedal bike
1976--Honda CubC65 in grey
1978--Datsun 160J sss in orange
1980--Datsun 160J sss in pearl black
1982--Alfa Berlina 2000 in white
1983--Fiat Supermiriafori 2000 sports in white
1986--Honda Prelude in blue
1988--Alfa 75 Twin spark in blue
1989--Bmw 2002 in white
1990--Honda Prelude in black
1991--Alfa 75 Twin spark in black
1993--Bmw 325i (e36) in black / Nissan 300zx in pearl white ( both concurrently )
1997--Porsche 924 Lemans in blue / Harley Davidson sporster 1200 in chrome
1998--Bmw 328i (e46) in silver
2002--MB C320 in silver (avangarde)
2006--RX-8 in pearl white (current)

There were a couple of hum drums in between as well. Yeah I agree with all of you the 8ight drives beautifully.

Latest edit 6th Aug>inserted 2 more rides of the early 90's.

4th Aug Edit>As this is getting so interesting, I've decided to enter the more boring (strictly my own opinion, no offence to any bro or sis) rides I've own or is still owning:

1979--Ford Escort in blue
1980--Honda Civic in black brown
1982--Honda Quintet in blue
1991--Nissan Nx coupe in black
1992--Toyota Corona 2.0GLi in black
1996--Bmw 520i (e39) in silver (non steptronic)
1998--Bmw 520i (e39) in black (steptronic)
1999--MB A160 in silver
2003--Honda CRV in silver (this suv has gone beach combing)
2003--Bmw 520i (e39) in silver
2004--Bmw 520i (e39) in blue
2005--Bmw 520i (e39) in black (current)
2006--Bmw 320i (e90) in silver (current)

The best were the sports saloons (the 325i could sit at 235kph whole day) but as age and family caught on, the desire for a comfy and quiet ride took preceedence hence the entry into the executive class like the e39. But the boy in me wanted cars like the fairlady 300zx and the Rx-8. Also when I was hit by the feeling of mid-life crisis, I grabbed the Porsche & the Harley.

This is really firing me up very nicely.........thanks for reading.

1st Car: Mercury Cobra: Black and beautiful pony car. Dint last long as I totalled it within 4 months of driving it. My future ex-wife to be was it in too.... may explain a few things! I crashed into another car that ran their red light! Nearly killed their front passenger. He was in such a shocked state of mind, seeing a black sports car plought into him at speed, down hill. First thing he said to me was,"Nice coat you have!" (It was a nice winter coat too but I didn't expect him to notice after a near death experience!) He must have been a early proto-type metro-sexual.

2nd Car: Ford Mustang Turbo: Black and beautiful too! (A replacement for the first) Clunky american peice of ****. I always remember the turbo. Huge winding sound after you hit about 2400rpms. Then wham! Seems like everyone is sitting still while you zip past them and the speedometer. (The speedo then only indicated 90mph or something like that only. Lots of speeding tickets.

btw. I have got a speeding ticket on a bicycle (racer) before... in a 20mph zone (on campus). Not sure what he clocked me at but I had quite a crowd around me while he gave me the ticket! My 15minutes of fame!

3rd: Red Golf GTi: Traded the near death trap of a Mustang after a few years of fun... thats why I will never buy a sports car second-hand again. Got myself a rocket in the pocket, VW Golf GTi. Fun,, Fun car. Lots of speeding tickets too. Great hting is that with 50 states, all not clever enuf to get networked up, they only counted for each individual states' records only. Dint kena suspension.

4th: Madza MX6. Black coupe. Drove the GTi but the ex drove this. Wan't too exciting a car. Nice lines though.

5th Seat GTi: Carrying on from my previous red car theme; I got myself a SEAT Gti. Basically a VW Gti chasis and engine but spanish design which I thought was better than the Golf version. Bought this in S'pore, paid 48k for my COE! Had to keep this for a while. Good while it lasted. Not bad run around. A few speeding tickets here in S'pore -- two within 2 weeks. Lots of 200+ km/hr runs along the N-S highway... no tickets but drained me of lots of 50ringgit notes though, on nearly every trip up north. Sometimes twice on one trip. Even ask for change on 100ringgit notes before. Can't be shy about money!

6Th: Also had a Red Suzuki jeep for my mountain biking trips. Was a good idea when i got it but really sat on the parking lot for of the time as my friends got lazier and fatter with less and less mountain biking trips! The few times I drove it without a mountain bike, man... death trap! Felt like i would tip over when taking corners over 25km/hr!! Noisy too, which explains my partial hearing impairment nowadys!

Now: Black RX8: Different sort of car, do still miss some grunt/torque but love the electric sounding engine that we have. Also, with any true driving, revs and more revs are always fun; with lots of gear changes. 16,000+kms and still having fun. Making a trip up to north again, getting my hand outs of 50rings ready!!

Wow...i'm impressed...some of the cars u guys driven are classics...makes the car
i've driven so far in my life looks like toys...Anyway, I think the bluebird sss is a
great car...seen someone driving it a few yrs ago...looks stable at 180km/h even
when the car is totally stock...it juz makes me wonder y does nissan like to give
some of their car really odd names?

The land rover discover is a really rugged car...dun think i can ever get that car?
it'll juz make me wanna live in the mountains for the rest of my life to enjoy
the terrains...

A Datsun sss in orange n in 1978?hahaha...the car must be the most attention
grabbing car on the road? i wasn't born until a yr later but i did hear
from my dad that this was one of the most powerful japanese car on the spore
road back then...his brother got one...he almost stole it every single nite juz to
race wif pple...

Mercury cobra?Ford mustang?holy ****...I think I juz wetted myself...hahaha...
I would have done anything to get myself into cars like that?
Traditional american muscle wif super large displacement engines...
but bro...how can u get hearing impaired from a suzuki jeep when u've driven
all this cars with such raw engines?

Hahaha...seems like everyone was getting speeding tickets...police everywhere
must be working overtime or something...I always remember when i got my 1st
ticket...i was like..oh ****...wat did i get myself into this time...i got quite freak
out...but hey...that was the 1st week i got my license,so i guess i'm still pretty
green back then?

So, what have the other bros in the forum driven?it'll be really interesting to
find out...heehee...

I got both the bikes hidden in NTU while studying there (staying in hostel) took a bus when going home every weekend.

I still have the Rx8, seldom drive (only 14000Km after 1.5yrs) spend most of the time in the carpark, but I did polish and wash it regularly.
(the Rx8 is more like a beautiful vase to me)

Alrightk, what the hell...I'll play.

1973 - Mercedes Benz 280 SEL. (4.5L, 8cylinder) This thing was build like a tank! My house would rumble every time I pulled in and out of the garage. Car was stolen out of my garage the ONE night I didn't put it away... Recovered a few days later; stripped.

1973 - Mercedes Benz 280 SL - Pretty much same car as above, just slightly smaller and different color.

1986 - Pontiac Fiero SE (V6) - The Civic KILLER! New engine and Tranny only have about 8,000 miles. Car has only 91,000 original miles. I'll probably turn it into a kit car.

1988 - Mazda B2000 - Great little work truck. Sold it about a year ago (200,000 + miles)

1999 - Mazda 626 - Great car, just a very tempermental tranny.

1999 - Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition - Great SUV, just bought it b/c someone sold it to me at an amazing price. I'll probably sell soon and get something more, "me"

2005 - Mazda RX-8: My baby....

SGRX8 - those are fine cars you have there - some of my favourites!

My list

1988 - Ford Laser S - 1.5l twin carb, bright red, inherited from my brother in Perth. Good fun. Totaled it after being hit by someone beating a red light.

1992 - Mazda 323 GT - 1.5l EFI - updated version of the same - more powerful but rust bucket and was a 2nd hand import

1995 - Honda Civic SiR (EG6 model) - very fun screaming vtec. Had a racing ECU that revved to 9500rpm... last I checked, this car is still on the road!

1997 - Mitsubishi Lancer Mivec - my first new car. Slower than the Civic, but more practical and pretty good fun too.

2000 - Audi 80 (9year old)... total piece of crap... just a money saving scheme...

2001 - Volkswagen Golf VR6 - fantastic car - got it 2nd hand at scrap value and it only had about 70,000 km after 8 years! Caught many civics and wrxs unawares.

2003 - RX-8 - never test drove, bought it based on mag reviews, first one on the road here, and still loving it. After 3 years, still gives me a buzz everytime. Cannot think of an affordable replacement car at the moment.

This one most probably you guys wouldn't have driven before.

I didn't exactly own this ride but I drove and took care of it for 2 years.

1989 to 1991-NS
M113 Armoured Personnel Carrier with 0.5mm Browning HMG
6 litre Ford diesel engine mated to a 4 AT.
Those days, we used to drift these machines at Area D
quite a few of our M113s came from the US Vietnam war,
talk about 2nd hand

Wow BlackEight, M113 also count ah...

My list is short cos I am only a baby compared to you guys, but I'll add in too..and i'll try tomake it entertaining.

1996
KHS Mountain Bike with 21 spd Shimano gears and water bottle holder. Flourescent yellow. 0-100 not possible. Stolen by some jerk. Location currently unknown.

1999-2000
Land Rover Defender (olive drab). 4WD Convertible with canvas top. No aircon. No power steering. 0-100 not possible. Speed cut at 55 kmh. ICE = 2 x VRC940 (expandable to 4 x VRC940)and 2 box speakers. 2 radio antenna and rifle rack included.

Mercedes Benz Unimog. Weight - 1 ton. No aircon, but got power steering. 0-100 not possible. Speed cut at 55 kmh. GTI (Got Turbo Inside). Comes with solid metal circular sunroof and 2 diesel generators. ICE = depends on configuration, but cost of ICEing each Unimog ranged from S$1M - S$3.8M. I had 6 of those Unimogs. ICE options include computer with 21 inch LCD screen, vehicle mounted 28 inch cathode ray TV (from the mess), mini fridge, fax machine, 4 telephones and 6 radio sets of varying frequencies. Can even hear commercial aircraft transmission. An impressive ride if you want to convoy down Orchard Rd (which i did once).

1999-2001
1979 Honda Accord 1.6l hatchback (white). 20 years old, 0-100 in 100 seconds. Top speed of 95km/h (before extreme carbody vibration and steering wheel shuddering). But one rainy night, I found out it could drift when I hit the brakes to avoid a red light camera and spun out. Or I might have just been a sucky driver.

2001 - now
2000 Mercedes Vito Van 108CDi. Also GTI. Irritating speed beeper that triggers at 55km/h. Has the notorious distinction of attracting Traffic Police, car park aunties, security guards and fines of every kind. Also solely responsible for my 23 demerit points acquired for speeding at speeds between 80-92km/h (of which I have 8 months more to stay "clean"). Shares drive time with the 8.

2006 - now
2006 Mazda RX-8. Codenamed Project D. Chick magnet. My precious.....

Very true! I was speeding into campus to class during the fall or winter... and late to class. I was cold so I had to keep warm by cycling faster. Even had the royal treatment... blue lights flashing!! I felt like a rockstar!! I kept the ticket for years!

'86 Pontiac Fiero - Yeah yeah, quit laughing. It was actually a reliable car. My first car and I still have fond memories. Mine never caught on fire.

'92 Mazda Miata - I loved this car and still miss it. Put 176000 miles on her and she's still on the road today. I occasionally talk to the guy who bought it. He takes good care of my baby.

Jeep CJ-7 - no idea what year it was, got it used. Hardly drove it, then sold it. Whatever.

2000 Honda Accord V6 Coupe - Nice. Reliable. Boring. Great car, lots of features for the price, rattled like marbles in a blender. Got tired of it and got ...

2004 Mazda RX-8 - ranks right up there with my Miata. I love both equally. I can only hope the RX-8 turns out to be as reliable as the Miata. So far, so good! I'm very happy to have this car.

Interesting....Here's mine:

95
Proton Iswara 1.3 manual. Car required for the job, a basic car with a style I somewhat like..

96
Honda Civic VTi EG6 Hatchback. This is where it starts.. Still relishing the ride, esp when the valves sweet spot. Style is nice, engine/built quality good, slacked on brakes and safety features. Have a few scare near miss incidents.

98
Mitsubishi Galant VR-M (24v V6). Well spec car, smooth and respectably powerful engine, well equipped. Downfall is smth Mit can never get it right - the suspension and interior built quality. Bugs not fixed since day one. Was surprised and proud that many saw it as 'dream' car'.

2000-now
Saab 9-5 2.0 lpt. Considering the price I paid for the Galant vs this, sort of no-brainer for me to switch. Powerful/torquey, safe, comfortable, solid build and unique design. Good factory sound system too. Still with me as the family car, for as long as it runs. A car that I could let my wife drive w/o much safety worries.

11days old
RX-8 Auto. Jus love it! My preferred ride everyday, although it bugs me when I need to go/park at some carparks that concerns me..Guess many fellow members have the same bugging thoughts too? Gotto do up the ICE for sure.

Cheers.
