What rims do you guys recommend?

Went to view some nice rims at stamford tyres. Heard they came up with a cheap but quality ssw rims. Thinking of going for the 18inch. But I wonder what statistic of tyres suit the car best? For example, the size, offset etc? The guy at the shop recommended this 5zigen to me for about 4k+ ( the rims are thicker at the back and thinner at the front). So anyone got good rims using already or to recommend a good cheap place? Thanks

frankli,if u wana run a staggered config,it'l definitely improve the looks.the dnside will b tat u r unbalancin the car wt's distribution=som handlin loss.but generally,its not much of a diff if u r nt a hard core trackies.
@ 4k+,u can gt better(IMO) wheels like volk racin or grams light.zigen wheels r abit on the heavy side,if u runs wider rubbers, wich is the case of staggered config,u'l loose out som pick-up.
so,its wiser to gt lighter wheels if u wana runs wider rubbers

u can do ur mktin @ yap bros, leong seng or GR.

Hi

Agree fully with bro cuscorex that for 4k+, u shld go for performance' rims like Volks and Prodrive. Other makers include Works and Weds.

Yap bros need reccommendation else u sure kenna 'katok'. Try to get some referrals from bro here so ah heng will slice u less. Leong Seng slightly better, IMO and their choices of rims are as good. Display wise I prefer Leong Seng. Kevin is a nice guy while Ah heng is more 'loud'. Ur choice.

Thanks Guys for the great input. Btw, where's yap brothers and leong seng?

EBS 04-03-2005 03:50 PM

Paya Ubi Blk 53 if I am not wrong. LS and Yap is just 3-4 unit away from each other but when u go window shopping, please do not mention u are going to their competitor next.

Bros....I've been looking around for new rims for a few months now (as some of yu guys know) and the shopping "process" is great fun. Finally, the Volk SF Winning has won me over. Would appreciate some opinions....silver or gold for my winning blue? I'm stuck in a 50/50 decision on the colour :)

Personally, if the Gold is a dark gold, that would make it look like the rally wrx combination which I think is great. Mine is also a winning blue, my personal choice would be silver unless the gold is a dark gold. So care to share whats the spec of the rims ur getting? How much and from where? I am also searching...

Genesis 04-04-2005 10:44 AM

These are two-piece forged aluminum, 18 x 8J offset C +42 since I'm going to keep the stock Potenza RE040's. I'm still working on the source......

i will go for gold for the uniqueness...... in fact gold looks rather good with blue!! blue with silver looks a tad too common on the roads... juz my honest opinion

Genesis 04-04-2005 12:03 PM

Thanks for yer opinion coupe. Gold does look nice, but alot of blue STI on the road with dark gold rims...silver is more common, but also not many 8's around as such.....decision pending!

EBS 04-04-2005 12:45 PM

I have seriously considered white, but I think the whites would look best with bodykit (like the INGS pix in Hyper Rev) which I don't have. White rims on the stock car might look a little strange for lack of a better word :) But hey, thanks for the suggestion Bro, certainly would be unique!

moreover white rims, maintenance very siong... everyday come back must clean and wipe rims..... cos our stock brake pads give out a lot of dust.....

EBS 04-05-2005 01:04 PM

Well if I have a dark coloured car, thats my choice but the titanium Grey is a bit light so settled for a darker rim colour.

Maintenance of rims is always very siong. Whether stock or after mkt brake pads oso no different. Just have to clean them every 2 to 3 days.

Hi EBS, how do you clean the brake pads? i'm experiencing some squel, could that be a result of rust or wear & tear?

sqflyer 04-06-2005 05:13 AM

voyager, I think what he meant was cleaning the rims, not the brake pads. Some owners have experienced brake squel and the Mazda agent in SG replaced new brake pads under the warranty. Some still reported squel after the replacement, so maybe there's no good fix for it. *shrug*

EBS 04-06-2005 06:13 AM

Hi

I was referring to the rims (from an earlier psot). U don't need to clean brake pads. As u drive and brake, the pads will always be 'cleaned'.
The squeal can be due to
1. brake pads wear (since MM don't give very good brake pads!)
2. warped rotors
3. performance brake pad squeal (usually performance pads will make noise)

So if ur car is new, unlikely rotor warped unless u spray water at ur rotor when it is still hot!!!!! when u wash ur car. If u are using stock pads, cannot be point 3 so likely point one. Change the brake pads and it will likely solve ur problem.

Pse consider changing the brake hoses as well as brake fluid to give u better performance. Brake hoses for 8 is abt $450? generally. Good performance brake pads $250 upwards.

Genesis 04-06-2005 08:43 AM

My experience...three weeks now with the replacement pads and no squeal at all. Better yet, a substantial reduction in dust on the fronts....and I mean substantial reduction. The stock pads sooted my rims like crazy.

CaNNaVaR0 04-06-2005 08:53 AM

bro...
what replacement pads are you using now?
After market performance or from MM?

Genesis 04-06-2005 09:10 AM

Hi bro...just replacement pads from MM under warranty, dunno what kind. Note that Mazda has issued a service bulletin at this link well for NA but specifically for 18" rims.

Hey EBS, what do you think of work rims? Are they good and value for money? Is it too heavy? Do you know if a offset of 48 is suitable for the RX8? How big can one go before the wheels starts to rub against the fenders?

EBS 04-06-2005 01:11 PM

Hi

If u look at the price range in Yen for the diff brands, u will find their prices here to be competitive so 'value for money' is the same across diff brand. For normal, standard MM car to replace existing 18" rims, offset +42 is recommended. So far the biggest rims I have seen on the 8 is 19" Volks although in magazine, it seems fitting 20" rims is okay as well. It depends on how low u lowered the car be4 the tyres rub against the fenders when u put on big rims. So if u intend to put on big rims, u just have to be careful.

Big rims make the car look 'chio' short of a better word. My choice personally would be 19" (best of both world) but to most folks, dumping the stock 18" RE040 tyres is a sheer waste of money so most changed to 18" after mkt rims to use back the stock tyres. Just remember, bigger rims are heavier and so are wider tyres so choose forged rims ($$$$) and lighter tyres if u are the look good and want to chiong type driver.

18" branded forged rims cost around $700 so 19" ones will prob go for $850/900. Performance tyres will set u back $1600 so we are looking at $5k+.

I like the Work Emotion Kai, the Volks TE37, Prodrive GC 06 all in white (demand attention) although most people will prefer a 2 piece/3 piece forged rims with diff depth for the 8. The choice is up to u.

Hope to see a 20" rims on a 8 soon??

Cheers
