I just installed my modified intake last night and drove around town without a hitch. Will try to do some test runs then I can analyse the performance data and see if it really works well before I can recommend it to anyone. In the meantime, you can just order your Simota Intake with me and I'll get them to reserve a piece for you in the next shipment. The A'pexi Power Intake mod can always come later.
Sgflyer, how much does the simota intake cost? quite interested to change too.

the original simota intake dun cost much.... BUT to make it effective and efficient and maximise the performance, suggest you do exactly wat flyer did:

1. add in the wire mesh
2. change to apexi cone filter

u may wish to ask flyer whther he is doing the mass order for the simota intake only or he is doing the MO for his "apeximota intake" :D :D (got difference one ok.....).... we have our own source of apexi supplier, so u guys no need to worry. Provided flyer is free enuf to modify for u guys, that is.......

I'm pretty sure this (the "apeximota" hor.... not the original simota) works for the autos as well..... if the auto pple are not convinced, pls volunteer one auto to be the "guinea pig" and try.... i'm pretty sure it can work after extensive testing by flyer.....

he has tried n errored (in chimology terms, its called "R & D") many many ways to make sure this intake works..... so trust the man...!!

fitting wise, shldn be a big prob...... the cone is quite small.....

I have yet to remove the VFAD on my car because I don't want to rip out the front bumper again until I get my hands on the REVi RAD, so I can't confirm if the problem lies in the wire mesh or the VFAD. All I can say is the wire mesh does help to stabilise the air flow but I don't know if the wire mesh is enough to solve the stalling problem without the VFAD until I remove the VFAD.

In any case, I mentioned to Vanquish that he can just get the Simota Intake and it'll still work fine as long as the VFAD is not removed because the Simota Intake does NOT come with the wire mesh so the VFAD must be there. Or else he will have the same stalling problems that I've encountered.

No lah, it just SEEMS like you got something against HKS. Thanks for sharing the info and providing the link to this report. I've been searching for your previous post on it but didn't find it.

The cost of the Simota Carbon Fiber Aero Form Intake is around $390-$400 but they told me they would give us a cheaper price for club members. However, they have not given me an official quote (maybe $360?). Once the next shipment is in, they plan to come down to one of our Sunday meet-ups and do a mass sale & installation and take some photos for their marketing/promotional purposes. Because each shipment has limited quantities, I'm just helping them to coordinate now many from our club intend to get the Simota Intake so they can reserve the necessary quantity for us.

So far I've got a number of people who have expressed interest in the Simota Intake but I've only confirmed order for Orr-beh and Vanquish. Please PM or SMS me your confirmation if you guys want me to reserve your Simota Intake in the next shipment.

You might wanna try just removing the air reflextor(the piece that's visible once you open up the hood, nearest to the nose piece) and try accessing the VFAD via that hole. If my memory didnt fail me I think the VFAD can be access thru that hole.... that again I could be wrong... but worth taking a look.

Since you guys are on the topic of air filters, what are your views of the heat shields these intakes provide? Do you think its really effective in blocking heat from the engine?

The VFAD cannot be removed without taking out the bumper. The access hole from the top is not big enough as there are several metal extrusions that obstruct the opening and the safety catch for the bonnet as well. You can see the VFAD, but it's too big to fit through the top hole.

I think the layout of our engine compartment is good with the air intake in front of the engine and the air inlet providing "cooler" air from the front. However, due to the high heat of our engines and the fact that our air intake sits directly above the radiator, some sort of air box or heat shield is definitely a welcomed bonus. Personally, I like the look of Simota's "Carbon Fiber" heat shield and it helps to keep the sound levels down too.

Just an update, I just did a couple of runs for fun and the performance data was marginally over my original run with the stock intake. However, this is inconclusive as the original run with the stock intake was done on a different day under different environmental conditions. I will do a stock vs A'pexi runs one after another to get more definitive results over the next few days. A friend who was present at the runs commented that the sound of the intake was very smooth and sounded "sweet". LsBlack... this one's for you...

yes, there is no intake set from apexi for the rx8 yet... meaning the pipe plus the filter head plus the concealed box/heat shield

the one sq is using is a general cone filter from apexi that can be fixed on any cars...

Yo SQflyer, you moulding the holy grail of air filters for the rx8? :p Thats an awfully lot of research you're doing for an intake dude.

BTW is that the auto bahn kit you got there? Looks awesome on the yellow. Its got a very European sports car feel to it. Didnt seem to stand out as much on the black 8 they advertised the kit on.

No lah, there's no such thing as a holy grail for air filters for our 8s. Performance benefits from intake isn't significant. I'm learning about air filters from going through all this exercise. As they say, it's about the journey, not the destination. Wah.. that's a lot of ink. :p

As for my 8's new dress, yes it's the Autobahn kit. I like the clean lines and I think it makes the 8 look more classy. The lines and contours look more defined on a bright coloured car. Definitely brings a
