Shell Mineral 10w30 vs 20w50 ?

Hi all,

Just chanced upon the 10w30 in Malaysia, which I do not see in Singapore. Would it be better than 20W50? Any comments appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Please change the oil to something else. it is very bad.
shell 10W30 will turn black in less than 1000km. better check your oil.
trust me i just changed mine within 300km. its far more worse than other oil. funny. 20W50 shell mineral is worse because it make engine knocking sound obvious. bad really bad. some oil filter might nt be able to go through.

idetmitsu mineral 10W40 is not bad.

20w50 is fine for our weather...
The important thing is the viscousity still ok...not whether the oil gone black

10W can be use at a lower ambient temp than 20W, but theres no 4 seasons in Singapore so 10W or 20W has no diff.

30 is thinner and 50 is thicker.

30 (thinner) will have lesser stress on the engine and save a bit of fuel (not much), rev smoother, lower engine noise, not good if u always maintain high rpm cos too thin less power

50 (thicker) more stress on Engine comsump more fuel, noiser, good if u alway maintain high rpm cos more power.

Erm..I thot the oil is suppose to turn black? it shows that it is doing its job. Knocking sound could be due to the not so gd quality petrol in msia.

no la. what i mean is the quality of the oil is not that good. turn black in 1 thing, but turning black and lose vicocity is another, try to take it out after 300km. u will be surprise. what i am most concern is the life span of our car.

dear member,

I tink u r very misinformed. Oil black, like wat others said, is normal. Knocking sound as per wat others said again, is not so much due to ur engine oil. Oil filter cannot go thru - seriously, so far, no such thing. No matter how thick the oil is, still can go thru, unless engine oil has so many particles until it blocked up ur filter, which is super duper rare. In any case u will change ur oil around the 5,000km mark.

Oil viscosity has been explained by morgan. Maybe you wld like to read up more n find out more frm the forum and the world wide web abt the oil used for the rotary engine.

Oil is suppose to turn black with use, it means its doing its job of removing debris from the engine use and combstion.

I use 20W50 and there's not even a single sign of knocking. Haha oil cannot pass through oil filter, that's a new theory.

have any of you used US made oil filter and found that some oil is not what it is written on the bottle? i guess not. API grade is bull all around asia, malaysia is an obvious country that have this problem. i personally used K&N filter before along with 15w40 splitfire engine oil, after the oil change started engine and found it not really smooth. so what happened next is my mechanic put out the dip stick and found that there are no oil, hmm, i wonder why.

ok here we go back to shell 10W30. oil turn black is due to 2 basic factors,

1. like yiksing say, Oil is suppose to turn black with use, it means its doing its job of removing debris from the engine use and combstion. i agree but also remember our car is a rotary car, most of the time it also burn out oil. and not less than 1000KM

2. oil turning black means molecular structure of the oil had been changed, this is what i learn from Q8 oil lab. and this will reduce the effectiveness of the oil. anyone of u have went to toyota showroom and saw this sample they put showing changes of oil ? its a block with 5 type of engine oil throught out its life. Q8 lab actually did test on shell 10W30 it was really low quuality, i was a fan of it and now i decided not to use it due to bad experience with it. those who wanna use shell10w30 can try and compare after a few drive.

Ben....i think the shell 10w-30 is specifically for Perodua vehicles la ....

...and the engine knocking thingy, it think its from our local gas station la....
...the quality of the petrol/diesel itself..........even my mom car cant use petronas coz got weird sound when throttle......once it change to shell, evrthing seems fine..........

...anyhoo....thats my 2 cents la...
