I have another suggestion for them. Go giant and catch everyone coming out with kitchen utensil like knives or rolling pins and charge them with planning to riot or murder.

Stop 600 people and charge 34? What are they thinking? Does this mean 556 people are innocent collateral damage?

How will this look? "Police force fires 600 officers and charge 34"

The 556 are spectators, and the police are sending a huge warning to future illegal races. Too bad the 556 people were 'chosen' for this purpose. I wouldn't call them collateral damage, more like guinea pigs.

I sound like I'm backing the police here, but I try to look at it from the police's POV. My opinion, that's all.

Emperor has a point though. It does look like a huge PR exercise on the police' part.

some of the older cops are more reasonable, the younger ones not so. actually they also put up with alot of my ranting. every half hr walked up them to pester and threaten them, guess i don't look fierce enough to get my way :Freak_ani

What is that?? My abbrev. not good...

sqflyer 07-11-2006 06:31 AM

All are abbreviations for roads in SG.

Emperor 07-11-2006 06:57 AM

556 spectators! Most local soccer matches do not even have half that number of people. To get 556 people the illegal race must be really quite big, organised and well publicised.

But sometimes you think about it. When you are just but a small police officer and everyone around you is corrupt; what do you do?

BlackEight 07-11-2006 11:28 AM

I used to have an ex gf, her father was a police superintendent in malaysia . whenever I got caught for speeding, all I had to do was pass my speeding tickets to him.

one day I touched on this veri sensitive subject of why certain individuals within the force were corrupt. there were 2 things that I will always remb from that conversation . 1. the lowest ranking police officer earns rm500 salary a month, how to feed a family of 5 or 7? these 'commisions' from public are seen as acceptable supplement.
2.even a superintendent only earns 2000 a month apart from other benefits.
but the higher u climb, the more u are subjected to temptation.

if u are a clean cop n do not accept such bribes from influential individuals, u create enemies which the force will not protect you from when u retire.
btw i'm talking of the situation 10
years ago so things might be different but I doubt so.

we as outsiders will find it hard to comprehend until we are in their shoes.

jaii13 07-11-2006 11:48 AM

^ That's what I was talking about. I believe it is one of causes of corruption - cops aren't paid enough. Of course, their benefits are good, but these days where petrol and sugar costs so much, they have to get paid somehow. Some resourceful ones would open a side business, while some chose to abuse the authority and trust the govt and people placed on them by taking bribes and punishing those who doesn't.

Still not an excuse for their appalling behaviour.

Yeah man 600 people at an illegal race is hell of a lot. Hard to believe that the police let it get that big for so long. But I'm not sure about NST's report about racing to win sexual favours though. Sounds a lil too... fast & furious-ish?

xx88xx 07-11-2006 11:53 AM

the police are just trying to do their jobs (for once)... u can either cooperate and wait patiently or not cooperate and wait even longer...

for those that give kopi lui... u are just like them... equally corrupt... do wat the rest do... dun speed or be prepared to pay fine...

as for the lost id... u better pay a visit to the malaysian police soon... they confiscate id all the time during police raid in malaysian discos and night clubs... those who do not turn up to claim the id... are normally seek out with a police warrant.. and this i'm not kiddin u..

Emperor 07-11-2006 10:55 PM

Even if you do not speed you will still get fined. Especially if you drive a SG car. Just look along a main road in JB. There is this spot where a officer always station himself? SG cars always u-turn there and then the officer will "catch" the "offender"

Even if you raise their pay, they will still be corrupt. Its what it is right? extra money over and above pay. And everyone is doing it.

The newpaper articles are just trying to increase readship by making it sound more "interesting". Especially when fast & furious is debuting now.

lennon 07-12-2006 01:00 AM

Maybe to curb the increasing illegal street racing in JB.... The cops though since they're to scare the shit out of the racer for few months, why dont they make it big, with helicopters and hundreds of police ........ :scared:

jondog 07-12-2006 01:25 AM

so, in that same sense...why not Singapore TP do the same too.....at the sentosa screening thing.....JUST to scare the helluva our local racers....=)

Emperor 07-12-2006 01:29 AM

Nah.. should simply ban sales of any car above 1000cc or 80hp. Why trim the plant? Just kill it when it seeding.

jondog 07-12-2006 03:33 AM

lolz......then our rides won't exist in this sunny lil island...=)

Emperor 07-12-2006 07:36 AM

The authorities know it too. People are bound to speed. No one is 100% immune. They just "try" to enforce it to make sure such activities do not get too way out of hand. If they wanted to prevent people from speeding; they would have install speed limiters that limits speed to 90kmh.

Humans will err, need to err, have the will to err and have leeway to err.
