Idiot Alert

Hey guys n gals,

Just FYI. Been challenged on the roads twice by the same idiot in a Mercedes C200Kompressor Cabriolet. Once along Farrer Road, and the other earlier today along Yio Chu Kang. Licence plate begins with SGP and drives with the top down. Quite a number of other performance car drivers have tried to race but want to warn all and sundry about this moron in particular because he's a real dangerous driver and tailgates very closely while revving his engine. On both occasions, I was driving within the speed limit and just wanted to get home. Either he's a menace all the time or has something against 8 drivers.

If anyone spots his car crashed along the side of the road, pls tell me so I can go down and have the last laugh...sorry folks, still feeling very very annoyed!

this type of thing very subjective...

he cld tink that u r hogging the road becos u r "travelling within the speed limits".... agree?

if he tailgates u, juz switch lanes lor.... no need so pek chek one.... if he follows u and switch lanes and tailgate u again, then he must have something against 8 drivers...

Possibly...body profile matches that of an older, maybe 2003 CLK. But managed to get a glimpse of the bugger's rear-end and the badging was interestingly enough, C200 Kompressor.

agree that it may be subjective, but nah...road hogging slightly under 80 on a 70 road?? (my interpretation of speed limits usually takes into account +10 km/h). with traffic all around you?? besides, on both occasions he had a passenger and they got close enough for me to see their maniacal laughs (and gesticulating/pointing). probably does this all the time to all cars but he's an @rsehole notwithstanding, for his dangerous driving.

understand that its not a matter of pride or ego here, but a warning about plain idiotic behaviour...to meet with the same perp on the roads twice in the space of a week...that's just my luck. though for personal reasons I wouldn't mind still having that last laugh.

bro, u r road hogging regardless wat speed u r travelling at so long as the car behind wans to overtake u, provided u r on the overtaking lane, ie, the extreme right lane.

even if u r travelling at 80km/h on a 50km/h stretch, him, at 110km/h behind u and closing in on u, u shld let him pass, if not u r considered road hogging.... its not abt speed limits on which particular road then u have the right to stay at wat speed u r travelling on the extreme right lane.

Haha, regardless of your philosophy on speed limits, if someone does that, just let him pass lor, pass already just go back to your previous lane then sua lor....

anyway, the slower you drive with top down, the higher the chance of bird **** dropping on you, so one should drive ones convertible faster.

This is Singapore, no one bothers about ur interpretation. Next time you see him/her tailing your ***, please do the following:

1. tap your brakes (to give warning) ... if nothing works.. go on to the next step

2. tap your brakes with a longer interval (to give last warning) ... if nothing works.. go on to the next step

3. Check if your seat belts is firmed and working. Then Emergency Brake
( This is a crucial moment, most probably you will be filled with emotions and aftermath scenes in your brain. But most of it will be thinking of which new bodykit you'll be fitting on..)

4. Step 4, needless to say, look for Bodykit..

Yes, there will always be someone driving faster than you or me. But what's the point of a speed limit if nobody observes it? Shall we petition the TP and LTA to recall all speed limits and let everyone drive as fast as they can, as long as people give way to faster vehicles coming from the rear? One of the main reasons its a 70 km/h road is that there are many right turns into various residential areas on the rightmost lane (of a 2 lane road), one of which I have to use to get home. Give way, and I'll end up going onto the TPE instead of home.

I don't think its fair to allege that people are road hogging unless they are going at ridiculous speeds on the rightmost lane, like 60-70 km/h on expressways. Maybe I should have exercised more calm and not vented like this on the forum when harassed like that. Should have seen coming the types of responses this would elicit. Nevertheless, I maintain that I wasn't road-hogging. The other party was tailgating.

Let's not use the rather slippery road-hogging/rightmost-lane for overtaking argument till the horse is flogged to death ok?

Crowded roads and expressway like those in Singapore's, do not usually afford us the luxury of filtering into a slower lane to allow faster vehicles to overtake. The operative term here is crowded. Not empty roads at 3am. There's even a chance doing so might actually be dangerous if you're forced to change lanes too abruptly. Besides, often when one filters into the slower lane, your speed will drop, sometimes greatly, and that isn't really a pleasant experience.

On autobahns or even the NSHW, when one filters into a slower lane, most of the time you are able to maintain your current speed, because there may not be any cars in the slower lane to immediately block and slow you down. So after you have given way to a faster vehicle, you can chose to stay in that lane until you catch up with a slow vehicle further up, before you cut back to the overtaking lane to overtake the slow vehicle. Conditions here when roads are still relatively busy are rather different.

Its not a matter of how fast one is driving. I can be doing 200km/h and can still be labelled as a road hog. Its just the way traffic conditions in Singapore demand that one to drive in a certain way, perhaps construed by some as road-hogging.

Not trying to be didactic here, but I'm sure everyone wants better road manners on our roads and highways. Ever wonder why many drivers have practically no road courtesy? Maybe we'll find some answers here.

Have you asked yourself why youve gotten a sports car?
How should a sports car be driven?

You should have gotten a corolla instead..................

Today a bloody road hog **** me like mad. I flashed twice and signalled right twice, bloody bugger still hogging. Hes travelling about 80-90 on the CTE.

We all know that the right lane is for overtaking and its courteous to give way noi matter what speed you are. This is the unwritten rule which most season drivers will know.

My cousin in the states say road hoggers get shot due to road rage.

And the next idiotic thing people could do is to slow down to look at accident. I always wish they would get into one themselves so they can look longer.

looking at it is, u deemed he is tailgating u cos u r hogging the overtaking lane...

he is only tailgating u if u r not on the overtaking lane... otherwise, if on overtaking lane, u r hogging the road...

Like i said earlier, its not abt how fast or slow he is driving, so long as u r on overtaking lane, and the car behind u wants to overtake u, and u r not giving way, then u r hogging the road.... yah, its a sad fact in spore road context.....

I totally agree and support the rule abt giving way to faster vehicles on the extreme right lane aka overtaking lane. Someone could be in an emergency situation for all you know. in fact, the argument abt traffic being heavy can't give way also does not make sense to me: one common observation is that cars not giving way to emergency vehicles just because the traffic is heavy. one sound of siren and annoucement over the loudhailer, and you see these cars scrambling to the inner lanes. it can be done given the right attitude.

I didn't buy a sports car so that I can drive at 140 km/h on a 70 km/h road. Do people who buy Lambos and Ferraris drive at 100km/h down Orchard Road on a weekend afternoon? I've seen a Lambo trying to plough through heavy traffic along Sixth Avenue horning and flashing headlights at all that stood in its way. Even more idiotic. That said, I was doing 140 km/h on a regular basis on expressways in my parents' corolla many many years ago when younger and more reckless. It's not as simple as a matter of WHAT you drive. Its HOW you drive. There's always a place and time for everyting. Do understand.

Have you tried giving way to an ambulance when nobody in the middle or left lane wants to let you filter in? It's situational. Its also clear that drivers who tail gate so close you can see their idiotic smirk in the rear view mirror are also not in an emergency situation. Anyways, my point of having a different traffic context here was obviously lost on you. If you've been on roads overseas, you would have a better appreciation of what I was making reference to.

it was just after dusk on both occasions. not much else i can say apart from what I've already mentioned above, it was either black or dark blue, driver was prob in his late twenties or early-mid thirties with short hair. likes to drive fast to avoid birdshit from splattering onto him.

traffic wasn't that light. some traffic lights ahead and nearerst car in front was a couple of car lengths away...after overtaking me the bugger kept jamming brake. why was i able to end up behind him and see what the emblems said? because there was a red light just a few hundred metres down and he came to a stationary position.

how did he overtake me? because i decided not to get confrontational or be a 'road-hog' in the parlance that some of you have used and switched lanes (as emperor reminds us, any seasoned driver will switch lanes -- don't assume people have little or no experience just because they aren't idiots). but in order to do so, i had to jam my brakes unncessarily hard to be able to swing into the next lane and had to contend with a slow moving vehicle in front, which meant more hard braking to prevent an accident.

1. How fast do you usually drive on the CTE? 120-130 km/h on average?

2. Pray tell, how seasoned a driver are you? I'm curious to find out more...

3. Read my post again about context. I can understand why people in the states get shot. But they also have very different traffic conditions and regulations. We do not live or drive in the states.

When I first got my car, my boss told me that the RX8 is a TP beacon. At first, I could not comprehend why, since I believed that 8 owners were a sophisticated, sensible bunch of people. Not ah bengs like Rex or Evo drivers. I think I'm starting to understand why now...

Uncle, please don't judge all RX8 drivers based on a few comments you've receive here.

afterall it's the driver and not the car, OK ?
you've even mentioned it yourself earlier.
