Holux G60 - GPS Voice Navigation Unit Review

Just bought the Holux G60 from AAAS Funan, which is an integrated SIRF III GPS and Pocket PC unit. This unit is very compact, and comes with native landscape mode. Built obviously with in car nav in mind rather than the portrait mode of a pocket PC, the G60 works seamlessly with KingMap, and comes with dedicated buttons for GPS operations in the car.

Using KingMap 3D v7, the software is similar to the GPS nav system in my mum's 7 series, and has similar voice navigation prompts as well. As the G60 comes with a 416mhz processor and the latest SIRF III GPS chip, acquisition of satellite signal is very fast and much more accurate than that crap TIBO. Map redraws a quite fast as well due to the high speed of the chip.

Map Pros:
- very detailed map, incls makan places, places of interest, etc
- easy to use interface, can switch between 3D and 2D maps
- very accurate, somemore can adjust accuracy

Map cons:
- updated to Feb 2005 only, some new roads may not have. a new update should be coming soon

Device pros:
- damn small, integrated GPS antenna, so got nothing sticking out
- SIRF III chip, beats TIBO hands down
- Wonderful PDA car holder
- Very fast device, buttons well placed for drivers
- Focking cheap: S$699 with map!! (vs $1129 for Tibo)

Device cons:
- WM 2003 Pro
- No wifi, no bluetooth
- a little bit plasticky

I think the 6515 a bit more expensive, but the gps chipset they use rather inferior, and the TI OMAP cpu is too slow for proper voice nav mapping.

true singapore very small, but sometimes its about getting to a place from a new and unfamiliar route, or when you need to go to areas you've never been before. e.g. now that i need to go to amk autopoint to visit ah lye to fix my stupid dent, i'll prob have to rely on it to find the place when i reach amk vicinity.
