Help

After whacking hard on my car, less than 6K RPM
theres a smelly burning smell coming from the aircon
is it supposed to be there?

sgrenesis 04-24-2005 08:20 AM

Have you been goin hard with the aircon on.

yup...
does it matter?

three2eight 04-24-2005 09:33 AM

I have this kinda burning smell whenever I push my car since day one. Relax, it's found on every RX8.

bombshell 04-24-2005 09:39 AM

I used to have that problem few months back on occasions when I drive hard ... don't encounter it nowadays though ... my mechanic told me the reason before but forgot what it was already ... Nothing to worry about though ... my 8 still runs fine ...

Any bros know what the prob is?

lennon 04-24-2005 11:13 AM

It is quite normal this smell comes about. Just try sealing the aircon intake permenantly and the smell wil disappear.

virus 04-25-2005 11:27 AM

got that smell too.........

Orr-Beh 04-27-2005 11:21 PM

Had the same problem too.
Was told by my SE could b from the new brakes....
Went around smelling the tyres ( like a dog ) only not duin wat it would hv done next..... :D

Sent car in today 4 some touch up.

From mechanics ---
could b unburn fuel reacting with the coating in the exhaust. Once the coating stablelised, the smell will go away...

Dunno true or not...

XtremeRev 04-28-2005 12:15 AM

false..i presume... cos i still had the same problem now n then when i rev hard......and my mileage already at 30k. duno wats the problem thou.. but believe that must be from the tyre.

sandman369 04-28-2005 01:42 AM

experience the same burning smell too.

separately, when I just start the car and moving off in 1st gear, there is a light "klang" sound, not sure from where. anyone else experience that? only happens when car just started.

CaNNaVaR0 04-28-2005 01:47 AM

i m thinking about sealing off the aircon intake or changing the filter wool to a higher quality one...
i cant take the smell... itz horrible...
need to do something about it quick...
any bad effects if i seal off the aircon intake?

Genesis 04-28-2005 07:32 AM

Just a thought....have you tried setting yer aircon at recirculate instead of fresh air intake? Wondering if that helps to block the smell.

Totally normal for all 8's, it's the ABS self-test.

haha.. ya. so my guess was correct... that means u must hv bought lots of new stuff eh? wow.. envy sia :p

PM u my details...

lennon 04-28-2005 12:33 PM

Sealing off the intake will not affect the car system at all. Did this to my old Audi. Air Recirculation wont block the outer air from reaching the cabin entirely. Moreover, people seldom look after or even forgot the existence of aircon filter (maybe only me :p). In the end, the filter is so dirty and you will be wandering what u are breathing in for for past few years. Just my experience.

Cheers

ok...
i have since reduced some weight on my right foot
but the fuel consumption is going up ???
what is going wrong man!!!
i m getting 280 KM per full tank!!!
Argh!!!!
Gear changing regular @ 3000-4000 RPM
Stock Car
Help :(

dru8999 05-05-2005 09:25 PM

280km? u kidding or what? Is yours an auto like mine? Well, I actually set a new record last week and managed to get 360km b4 the low fuel light lit up. I did mainly highway driving. I usually get around 330km when the light comes on. Running on SPC95.

coupe07 05-05-2005 10:08 PM

i m averaging 380km on mine. running on esso/mobil syn 8000. juz clocked 406km yesterday. occasional 8-9k rev. if not normally 4k change gear. 60% highway, 40% small roads

Hmmmm.. burning smell, bad gas mileage.... can you check if your exhaust tips are turning yellowish too? suspect a bad cat.

Manwe 05-05-2005 10:58 PM

I always smell the burning smell if the aircon is not recycling the gas(drawing air from outside). So I just press the button and the smell is gone.

If fuel consumption is really a big issue, try not to step so hard. Ever tried shifting at 2k? I did and can get 8plus km each time. But not much fun ;)

CaNNaVaR0 05-06-2005 12:06 AM

nope...
exhaust tips are fine
i drive without the occasional 8-9k rpm revving
and i accelerate slowly!!!
pumping shell 98 ...
V power i get only 240 per tank

fuel light will light up roughly just before 270 km and i can travel about 30 click more- max!

mine is manual and i tot it should save fuel
damn!!
brought to mm last week for servicing and i told them abt the problem
but.....
how now? :(

darkelfin 05-06-2005 12:07 AM

Actually on the topic of the aircon, I got a question. You know how there's an option for recycled air or intake air. I noticed if I turn on the auto climate control and put to XX degrees, sometimes, my air intake will change from recycled air to intake air from outside. Is this normal?

CaNNaVaR0 05-06-2005 12:39 AM

yup... this is normal...
i dunno why the system is designed this way but when i switch to auto
it will change to the intake air from outside.

i still looking for aircon filter replacement
anyone got cheap good deal?

wheew....thanks for telling me otherwise i would die if there's a prob with my ecu. haa.. :p

funny thing about ur fuel comsumption, u mentioned v-power's FC is higher than shell 98. i use 98 too and i too think the FC is not bad. but just saw a post by chaotichris in mcs that says her FC for v-power is better than 98.

tat's the thing bout FC, everyone seems to have different experiences. FC = Fully Confused. hahaa.....

yup..
6k mileage

heard that replacing the air con filter will prevent the smelly stuff from coming in

sgrenesis 05-06-2005 03:45 AM

The best petrol in my opinion is malaysia v-power, taht gave me the highest mileage

Neon 05-06-2005 04:04 AM

I have changed my air-con filter. My old one was like totally wasted, brown and sand particles n stuff...(my mileage is high)

I got mine from Mcwell, fit the mazda6 one, cuz same size and they didnt bring in 8's.

Feels good to be breathing well again :) Sum taiwan brand i think, not cheap too....

lohsk 05-06-2005 06:06 AM

Now how does that happen ??

sgrenesis 05-06-2005 07:28 AM

Hard to explain.

Went to sepang for tracking and on the way back stopped at JB for petrol. Usually a full tank only gets lasts me for 4 days but including the night i pumped in malaysia it lasted me 6 days. (i didnt "chao kuan" cause i drove all of the 6 days and still had to fetch my grandparents to airport from clementi)

I am all lost. ???

Bro....something not quite right here if only getting 240 km with Vpower and still getting burning smell after 6k. Yer a/c filter should still be clean, give it a check. By comparison, I have an MM 8 and I've never had the burning smell and I get on average 340 km with Vpower....and I shift regularly in the 4k to 6k range (higher depending on where I am ;) ). Take it back to MM and demand that they run a full diagnostic on the engine.

Let's stick to the topic at hand... Canna, that kind of mileage is ridiculously low considering that you tried taking it easy on the gas pedal. Mine is also MM and I'm getting a minimum of 400+km per tank of Esso 5000. Think you really need to go MM and get them to do a thorough check. Maybe it's related to the smell? I remember one of my friends had a foul smelling engine once, apparently an animal crawled up in there and died. :p

it not ridiculous... its super duper ridiculous... havin to pump every 4 days is crazy man!!!!

i highlighted to the service advisor last week and he said that the mechanics will do a thorough retuning during servicing and he told me to try it for 2 weeks first...
well my first tank after servicing gave me 300
so thats an improvement of 20...
today just pump second tank
will see how man

Low rider 05-07-2005 01:06 AM
