Heat Wrap over exhaust pipes.

The current Heat Wrap that r selling in Singapore GR is too expensive S$130.

Found one in Taiwan selling for only around S$40 (thats less than a 3rd of e price) can take heat up to 1260 degrees C (mins) . and 1150 degrees C for 9 hrs

Made of Ceramic, they call it Ceramic Cloth . it will not melt non change color (original color is White)

Its also resist Acid, Alkaline, Oil and water.

130cm long, 5cm wide, 0.5cm thick.

I'm thinking of buying this to wrap up the pipes just under our console box . so that e box will not be too hot and damage my mobile and ipod..

Do u guys think its a good ideal?
(going to Taiwan on 27th Aug. anyone want some? but not too many)

I have some pictures of it but do not know how to post them. if theres any kind heart members who could help to post, I can email the pictures to him

Thanks

Same here.

I found out that there are quite a number of Heat Wrap avalible in Singapore. but non of them has any technical specification on their products.

Most do not state the max temp it can hold.

But this Taiwan made one is good. the photos will show u the before and after the wrap is being burn by a blow touch in Reddish color and cool down back to same original color, (white).

but if the cloth that i had can withstand ship's exhaust, which is so many times hotter than our cars' exhaust, it shouldn have any prob....... but then again, buyer's choice.....

So how much will it cost? I don't mind if is a ship or plane heat wrap as long as it solve the problem.

Thanks Genesis for teaching me how to post the pictures here.

High 1 to High 3 is during high temp burning.
High 4 is after Heating and it turn back to original color.

Call Taiwan Manufacture and they told me cos its Ceramic Cloth so it can withstand heat of 1150 degees C for 9 hrs.

I went to so shops in Ubi Ave 1 and found out these Heat Wrap are actually meant for and design for wraping up the extractor so that the engine temp will be lower.

The shop sale guy told me quite alot of the The STI and EVO are using them for the extractors .

I believe that we can use them too , so that the engine will be cooler and the fan will not turn "on" that frequently after we switch off the engines.

Darn! Slowly, bit by bit, the poison is being injected.........

Ouuucchh.....

Are these wraps really water-proof after warp? Aren't these just some kind of fabrics? How can they be water-proof?

This is the product specs given my the manufacture.
I hope that u understand chinese. My chinese isalso not very good, but I try to explain it in english. please correct of my translation is incorrect.

able to withstand temp of 1150 for 9 hrs and max 1260 for a short period of time.

2. 比石綿製品有更好的抗酸、鹼、油、水、氣性能,還有抗鋁、鋅等熔融金屬侵蝕能力。
Ceramic material, Resist Acid, Alkaline, Oil, Water and Lead which is similar to Metal properties.
(Its not water proof, it resist , that means that the material will not get damage b acid, alkaline, oild and water))

3. 更好的高溫強度及保溫隔熱性能。
This one I'm not very sure but I think that it means.
Not a very good heat conductor and therefore able to prevent the heat from disipating outwards.

4.良好的電絕緣性能,特別是高溫電絕緣性能。
Non electrical conductor, especially at high temp.

5. 無毒、無害,對環境無不良影響。
Not poison, will not harm the environment.

Its not some kind of cotton fabrics it Made of ceramic material and the weiight is

300 ~ 1200﹝kg / m2﹞

See what I mean? how can a normal fabric be so heavy?

I know its not fabric fabric persay. I know its mixtures of other materials... in this case a mixture of ceramic.

There's a reason why i'm asking if its waterproof. If the wrap is for the header, i guess that's fine. But if it wrap are being used for wrapping exposed pipes under the chassis then I guess its not tat ideal. Well, imagine this, if your pipes are not hot enough to evporate any water that you drive pass (be in heavy rain or puddles of water), and letting the soaking wet wrap covering those pipes.... I guess one would have to have the pipe change very soon due to RUST....

Have u touch the Pipes after 5-10mins of engine running?

Its very hot. VERY HOT. (maybe few hundreds of degrees C and the boiling pt of water? 100 degreess C ) I guess e tailpipe temp will easily be above 100 degrees after 10mins)

Just touch the tailpipe. and u will know. The Midpipe is even much hotter (I guess a few times more) than the Tailpipe.

So even its wet it will dry up in no time.

Me have no quarrel - me always failed science :p

But moisture/steam can and is caught as the pipe heats up, and condenses again later (physics me think  ). Me know cos me X pipe was rusty before... :( That's what u get when u jet water in :o

Just went to Check my original exhaust that I took out from my Proton.

It was left outside the house where it is wet when Rain nd dry when the sun is out

The Muffler box and the Midpipe with Cat is total as good as new , No Rust.

But the Extractor becomes rusty.
(quite alot of EVOs and STI cover up their extractor to prevent the heat from raise back up to the Engine)

So I guess it really depends on whats the material of the Exhaust system for that particular model of car.

hai 08-15-2005 03:35 AM

did e exhaust wrap on my car (not e 8) from cat con to e 2 boxes. it's 3inch ss. e weirdest thing happened. after a spirited run, e overall length of e exhaust literally grew by abt 1.3 inches. wonder if it has got anything to do with it being super heated. afterall, e heat has got to go somewhere.

watoke 08-15-2005 09:03 AM

Monganoh,

Me interested! the freaky heat in the console is freaky hot !
If Ship uses it, think okie lah, SEA water is worst than rain or puddle of water right? :p
Count me in ...... :D

Genesis 08-15-2005 09:22 AM

Guys...a more efficient after market exhaust and mid pipe helps, it cuts the heat to some extent, but certainly not down to nothing. Aside from the better airflow, will still get heat to some degree in the center consol. It's just less heat, and combined with the better sound it's worth it IMO ;)

sqflyer 08-15-2005 10:25 AM

Gen, only problem is... as of this point in time, it's still illegal.
