Booked my 8! Thinking of aftermarket sunroof.
Hi guys. I finally plunged in and booked my auto 8 from PI. Should be getting my car in early Apr. After I put my name on the dotted line I got to test drive.... Anyway no regrets... yet.
As mentioned since mine is the basic auto 8 and not Type E, it doesnt come with a sunroof. I really would like a sunroof and the PI told me he can do an aftermarket one at $1200. I think that is reasonable but wanted opinions from you guys on reliability and workmanship. Do you guys think its a good idea? Have anyone done it before?

congrads man ! Welcome ! Honestly , sunroof is not really necessary ! however, it's up to personal preference : ) ... btw, mine comes with one but didnt really open it . With the $1200, u might want to spend on other mod first : )

ur better off ordering it w/ a sunroof from the factory- ie getting a package that has it. aftermarket sunroofs, if not done right, will leak later on and may also change the structural integrity of the car- as far as how the crumple capability of the cabin goes in a roll-over crash. if the car hasn't been manufactured yet, u can still alter the options with the dealer.

Dont do it.
1. Void warranty.
2. Compromise safety.
3. high chance of prob esp in wet singapore
4. If lousy job by installer, u cant go back to PI and they will not give u new car, ur in deep prob.
Get either a factory sunroof or live without one. $1200 can get a nice intake kit or subsidize rim upgrade.
cheers

What EBS says is true.
And add to the fact that our roof is already thinner than usual, it will become even softer when you cut a hole without proper reinforcing.
I personally did not like a sunroof so in fact i am real happy without it. (Only applicable in SG)

The PI initially said he could get one for me at $3000 which I was happy to pay but in the end he said factory will not make it as they are trying to get customers to pay more for Type E. :-( Sigh. I really want a sunroof! I loved it in my previous car.... But PI was helpful and gave me the address of an aftermarket sunroof maker and told me to go down to take a look before deciding whether I want one. Guess I will go down this weekend to take a look for myself. Apparently they provide 10 years warranty for the sunroof. I will provide an update once I go and take a look.

I have a factory sunroof on my 6MT and just fyi, there is a kinda flat indentation across the roof that slopes from the rear windshield towards the front windshield to accompany the sunroof, it's subtle but it's there. If you get an aftermarket job, they can't provide this indentation unless you change the roof, so I'd stay stock IMO.

Gen, mkl22 was refering to "sign then test drive" as in sign on the dotted line to buy the 8 then test drive. If dun like the test drive after signing, then how?

After Test Drive, even if u dun like the car, still you have to purchase, b'coz he (mk122) already signed on the agreement

I had a problem with my sunroof when I got my car from MM - it couldn't fully close on one side. I bought it back to MM and they fiddled around with it and found an extra bolt sitting there that was preventing one side from fully closing. Anyway, my advise is - don't go for the aftermarket sunroof. The 8's roof is not flat and in fact the glass of our factory sunroof curves up at the sides. Don't think an aftermarket sunroof will be the same. Maybe they will cut a smaller sunroof to avoid the curves. Money can be better spent on other mods.

My expreince of sun roofs is that its a great idea but you will land up opening up once a year or so. (And only becoz you remembered that you have one!) Believe me -- I have had a sunroof in all my cars -- cool weather countries... then you don't open coz its too cold with the on-rushing cool air; here, its just too damn hot to even think of opening without the aircon blasting at you. I am just amazed how many convertabiles there are here in SG with their top down at lunch time!
Then... there are the leaks -- cold or hot weather, it will kill the rubber seals around the glass fast. Try going to a car wash...
Plus, flyer is right; it lowers the roof of your car. Then I hope you are not very tall then if you are thinking of one. My 8 is the first car (in 25 years of owning cars) that I don't have one -- don't miss having one at all.

i mean aftermarket...
unless it comes with it.
i open everyday. i drive early morning and late evening. weather not hot.
agree with lowrider abt cabrio - soft top, rubba seal wear easily, the fabric tends to leak
for skyroofing and cc hard top converting, i was just rubbing in.
"...dun blame the swim trunks oversize if u can't swim"
"wearing an air jordan dun make you slam dunking..."
make your choice - decide the 8 you desire. be happy.

Did those of you who bought yer 8 from a PI go to MM frist to take a test drive? Yet, MM only has the 6MT so what to do if you want to test drive an automatic?
#25
Most PI I approached will not allow test drive. They will give all sorts of reasons e.g. they don't have a test drive car etc etc. Anyway I have already decided to buy the car but just wanted to have a feel of it since I already signed on the dotted line. Another way is to get a friend to allow you to drive their car or be a passenger....
